I have used my Land Cruiser to tow my 17' Caravel.
I too am aware of the official recommendation not to use spring bars for towing.
For shorter trips -- eg, for local RV repairs, maybe to the coast (Pacific Ocean is only 60-80 miles from here), I don't use the spring bars.
For a 600 mile trip to Montana I used them -- but I do find they don't seem to need as strong a setting via the chain links as I needed on my van.
