Don't throw away that check valve !  Ours was leaking too whenever the
supply hose was disconnected and we were on pump pressure.  Tried to
find a replacement at hardware and plumbing stores in May - finally
found a cheap imitation for $14.95 plus $6 in adapter fittings.  Had
second thoughts and took  the old one apart.  Replaced the seat with a
faucet seat washer from the hardware store (59 cents) and it has worked
fine ever since.  The old rubber washer had worn out after 35 years.
