permission would be nice, but I think there is a
limitation on copyright law - I believe a repair
manual that is older than 25 years old (or is it 40?)
becomes public domain unless the original author
reprints it...

I'd just do it, you know the saying:
"sometimes it's easier to apologize than ask
permission."
