Art supply stores sell a product called Friskit (as I remember).  Its a
transparent material that Illustrators use to mask off an area not needing
color or painting-great for air-brushing or spray painting.  It is tacky on
one side and placed over the entire area. An Exacto knife or razor is used
to lightly score the surface and you just pull away the section(s) you want
to paint. Burnish down the edges.
I have not tried it on aluminum or metal but it should work
