Annie,
In a post on here by Jim Smith, he said that you could "cut" something
(don't you love these specifics ... was it epoxy .... can't remember) with
paint thinner or lacquer thinner.  That would allow it to penetrate.  If Jim
doesn't chime in, I will dig up.  The chain was a cheaper way to make "Git
Rot."  Guess you got rot.
