Re: [VAC] Univolt converter

Thomas Griffith -

While I haven't actually looked at the 1970's Univolts in person, all
the photos I have seen show it to contain the dreaded Selenium
Rectifier; known to emit nasty gases as they break down and are now
illegal. This vintage will probably have lame paper caps as well. If you
are gonna keep it and rebuild, toss that rectifier (finned device) and
build or buy a heavy bridge and replace all caps as well for confidence
in filtration.

The UniVolt in my trailer is long gone. If I find one, my plans are to
utilized the fairly big (and admittedly quaint) housing with modern
circuitry.

Actually lots of folks here will suggest new converters and inverters
aplenty; fairly simple devices which come in all power ratings and lots
of protection for computers these days. The problems of power management
has been solved twelve ways to sunday. Keeping vintage supplys while
historically appropriate, may expose sensitive modern devices to
unexpected risks. Beee carefully. The equipment you save may be your
own.
