Bob,

I'd start out by going to a plumbing and heating supply outlet and
getting a 1/2" tubing swage.  This is an iron bar with a taper made to
drive into standard 1/2" copper and put an ID=OD end to avoid a
coupling.  Since your tubing is apparently already oversized this might
do the trick. Then all you'd have to do is sweat a piece of new tubing
inside the swaged end on the old.
