Hi Polly,

You asked, "What's a trunnion?"
 
It's the fist size end of a Reese spring bar.
The trunnions fit into the hitch head 
when you hook up to tow. The other end of 
the spring bars have chains attached.

There are better ways to describe the 
trunnion, but now you know what part of
the spring bar is involved.

What occurs is the two trunnion posts 
(top and bottom) rub against the 
inside of the hitch head and eventually 
become egg shaped. 

When that occurs, the choice is to replace 
both trunnions or hike up the chains 
another link. The latter is not really a 
satisfactory fix for many reasons.

Bottom line, when the trunnion posts
become egg shaped, replace them.
