Greetings Susie! If your '68 is like my '64 Overlander, the outside receptacle is switched - -on my rig, it is a wall switch near the kitchen sink. The polarity light migh be indicating a ground/neutral problem in the outlet that you are plugging into, but I am far from the best to comment on that issue.
