I've been puzzling over this one for years, as I always have a second hand 
vehicle and it is marginal as to whether to insure for collision or not.  The 
last time I tried to collect, they wanted to pay me book value for a car that 
was in exceptional condition, coming from a state with no salt on the roads 
in winter. They get the best of you no matter what and you know you won't be 
able to replace fro what they are willing to pay.  So I have deciced to "self 
insure", save the premium and replace the vehicle, trailer myself.  If you 
add up those insurance payments, it doesn't take long to get to $5000
