Scott.  Our 1971 has aluminum lining inside with the endcaps made of vinyl.
The aluminum is not Zolatone but has a nice weave pattern and looks great.
The end caps had badly yellowed and we sprayed them a matching off white and
they look good now and match the aluminum.  I see no problem with removing
the interior skin, if you are restoring, but I can see little benefit to all
the work.  Replacements would be difficult to find, I'll bet.  I would NOT
touch the vinyl.
