Terry, at least the longer hitch bar has a longer lever arm to bend. A
hitch from Reese made for the occasion should be heavier enough to
handle the added leverage. I'm just thinking from the viewpoint of an
engineer who studied strength of materials (but didn't test well) a long
time ago.

You are right that the hitch should be of dimensions so there's no
contact between tow vehicle and trailer.
