Compared to no regulator the automotive regulator is good. Its not great
even in its original application, SAE standards for voltage are too poor
for decent battery life. I've doubled battery life in vehicles where
I've build a bit more sophisticated regulator with far tighter
tolerances on voltage. But these circuits are not easily replicated, nor
are they modern designs.

My experiences with driving a car alternator with a lawn mower engine
have nearly always shown the output was limited by the engine, not the
alternator or regulator.
