Chris,

What you need to thread your cap is a 1/4 pipe by 1/8 pipe threaded
bushing (I'd use brass) from a plumbing supply and a 1/4 pipe tap and
appropriate drill bit.  I'd clamp the tap in a vise and thread the cap
onto the tap so as not to deform the cap with the vise.

Use teflon tape on the joints and it should hold the 40# or so that you
need.  One of the 12 Vdc tire compressors should pump it up fairly
quickly.
