Re: [SilverStreak] pot metal hinges

JD,
As we have learned, most coaches reveal factory holes under the 4" wide pot
metal hinge, when doing a replacement. Those holes are for the too-small
foot print hinge you have. All Silver Streaks initially came out with the
steel smaller hinge. Immediately SS learned the small 4 hole steel hinge
would tear itself out of the body and doors. This door-in-door is nice, but
heavier. So they needed more surface mount area hinge. The pot metal hinge
was born. It worked. It had 8 holes, not 4 where it mounts to the body. The
whole thing is twice as wide and spreads the load on the body and the 2
doors.

Immediately SS discovered the hinge would fail. No cast aluminum or pot
metal was going to flex. It would break. New coaches included a spare hinge
set and 3/16" pop rivets. People had no idea this wasn't just generosity,
but SS's knowing the hinge was going to fail. That is why they gave it away.
This problem never resolved. The hinge was always replaced for free by SS
right up until the day they closed.

You just happen to have one that came with steel hinges. If you never tow
it, or seldom tow it, you don't need this hinge. If your not towing, the
door won't get lost on the highway. It'll be on the ground nest to the
trailer.
