Re: [SilverStreak] new member

Lorrie,
Welcome, and you sure are at the right place! As you are here, you know
there is a site, www.TomPatterson.com. There you will find a lot of history
about Silver Streak, lot's of pictures and models. The site is dedicated to
Streamline, but includes much, much more. There you will discover Steamline
and Silver Streak have company and people ties from long ago.

Of the aluminum similar-look trailers and motor homes, Silver Streak was the
last to finally close. Silver Streak is the last generation of all the
orphan brands. Only Airstream survives today. Opinions vary like with any
brand, but a lot of people like me who own or have owned many brands find
Streamline the best constructed and Silver Streak almost exactly well built.
The major difference in the two is Streamline had a totally aluminum wall
interior including all cabinets and fixture furniture like the galley and
bath rooms for almost all units built. Only the doors and fronts of cabinet,
closet and drawers used either solid wood or composite fronts. Streamline
also used one-piece major shell ribs thru out that were extruded pieces like
a giant horse shoe up one side, over the roof, and down the other. Silver
Streak may also use this ribbing, but I've not had any of mine apart so I
don't know about that.

Both Silver Streak and Streamline have extremely good frames and floors and
when cared for, the floors never fail. I have 60's models with like-new
floors, but also have one with a totally bad floor. That's really a plus for
the two makers as opposed to other brands with serious frame and floor
constant issues. It all depends on what was allowed to continue to leak
without repairs such as broken windows, damaged doors and vents, bad
plumbing and such. A lot depended upon where the trailer spent it's life in
high moisture situations which could include flooding next to lakes and low
lying areas.

This list is a forum where people like you and I ask questions and discuss
Silver Streak in any nature. I believe no question can be asked or discussed
too much or often. It is a learning and sharing forum. It is well sponsored
and monitored to keep it on track devoid of off topic and personal chat
nature. Tom Patterson site is vast and supports the list with picture
gallery, archive by word search, and much more. The site constantly grows by
his singular efforts and is freely given without any of the typical burden
of advertisings so prevalent with other and similar groups. The list has a
good following and attendance in my opinion with robust and less active
periods. The list is only as good as those who participate and has an
amazingly great populace.

So you stumbled on to something made well by a generation who built what
they knew how to build like the airplanes of the war they fought. What they
made satisfied their need for jobs, a nations need for immediate housing,
and produced a quality product that has outlasted all but a few of that
generation that are now gone. You are at the right place!
