Re: [SilverStreak] Dometic fridge free to a good home

Curtis,
I'd love to have it. Please dig a 2 ft hole, back truck in hole, load
fridge, or strap to hand dolly, throw dolly over hitch, bring to Houston. I
sure do have a need for this in my SS which got the original thrown out for
a dorm fridge.

I personally would not use the coaches 12 v power.unless this is a three-way
fridge. If a two-way fridge, the on-board charger / converter voltage can
exceed 15 volts finish rate. There are serious problems with these "new
electronic controller" fridges blowing the solid state controller which are
like an LED with a narrow operating range of about 9 volts to 15 volts. Even
if a 3-way fridge, you have a choice. None of that will be included in
instructions, even on new units. The controller is expensive and nothing
will work without it.

The fridges controller draws very little current. I paid a lot for my new
one in the motor home and don't want to risk ruining it. I simply used a
little grey-plastic gel cell battery set in the ample space of the
compartment behind the fridge. It will last a long, long time. It's charge
is easily maintained by plugging in a little universal 500 ma (1/2) amp
charger converter into the wall outlet there in your fridges compartment.
Doing this means you run no wiring from anywhere to anywhere and get the
assurance of safe predictable voltage. The little, usually black plastic,
charger is available everywhere and are used for things like electric
razors, games, cordless phones, clocks, etc. and are inexpensive. Try it. If
you have a little battery handy, just connect to the light little wires and
plug in the fridge with an extension cord to test it. Be super careful with
polarity. Getting it backward is sudden death.

If is a 3-way fridge, then I would still run the fridge controller on the 12
volt little battery with independent charger, but then you will have to run
the wire you describe for the 12 volt heater element heavy draw.

I realize there are many people who simply connect the new modern fridge to
their coach "house" 12 volt supply. This is what I do and not intended to
upset them or start a discussion of the notorious problem years of various
manufacturers, especially Dometic.
