Re: [SilverStreak] camping in COLD weather

I live in a 64 Silver Streak, above 1700 feet in the Washington
Cascades. We have snow now and this is my second winter in this
trailer. (I've also wintered in Spokane, WA in an old Airstream). So
here are my thoughts. You need closed cell foam pads under ALL the
beds. My personal preference is for a down sleeping bag on the bed
(or a down comforter). We have major issues with cold seeping in
under the beds. We don't use the water system, so I'm no help there.
We haul water and heat it up on either the stove or the wood stove in
our attached porch. Propane heat is terrible, although it is better
than nothing. It puts out a lot of moisture in the air. Long term,
this will cause the stuff you have in the closets and overhead lockers
to get damp and mouldy. Fabreeze can help if you have any odd smells
due to condensation. I've never used the crystals that are supposed
to take condensation out of the air, so don't know if they work or
not.

I'd recommend also that you plan to dress a bit warmer than normal.
Pay special attention to stuff for your feet. It will get cold even
with the best of heaters on the floor. For those staying in one spot,
skirting definitely helps, but you'll also need to close off those
outside vents if unused. The vent to the refrigerator is another big
source of cold air.

I'd definitely recommend camping in the cold, despite the
inconveniences. It is fun and definitely makes you feel able to
tackle most anything ;)
