Re: [SilverStreak] new SS owners

Congratulations Youngs!
I have exactly the same model SS as you have just purchased, a 1972
Deluxe Continental Rocket. I bought it nearly a year ago from a guy in Las
Cruces, New Mexico. I met him halfway by driving to Gallup NM to pick it up.
I had only seen pictures of it on the internet so I guess I was taking a
chance. I was full of anticipation on the trip down to get it. I was not
disappointed. It is completely original and very retro.
I too, am an educator and I live in a house built in 1908 that I'm very
slowly restoring. It sounds as though our situations are very similar. As I
read your letter I was struck with the similarities.
I only spent two nights in the trailer on my trip home. I dared to hook
water up to it and other than a leaky hose connection it worked fine.
Everything electrical also seemed to work. The seller had not had the trailer
long and had purchased it from a neighbor who told him everything worked so I
had to trust him.
I have a tiny dent on the back street side corner and a small tear in the
edge of the belly pan on the curb side that I'm not quite sure how to take
care of. I'm lucky I guess because everything else seems fine. I haven't
used the furnace but I have a wall heater that works well. I found that out
when I decided to spend last Halloween night in it at a local Wal-Mart parking
lot so the neighborhood kids wouldn't bother it as it had been parked out on
the street in front of the house.
I wish it had a gray water tank but it doesn't. There's a portable one
in the trunk of the trailer but it's not very big. I can't believe how much
storage there is in the trailer and how big the bathroom is. It is amazing.
The beds, couch and all are original. My table is complete and even has to
leaves to make it bigger. I even have a built-in vacuum cleaner that works
although I have no idea where I'll be able to get bags for it. There's also a
filter for the drinking water but I don't know where to get filters for it.
I'm heading out this Thursday to visit my parents and go to my 35 year high
school reunion. I put new tires on it last fall so that's a worry I won't
have. We'll be staying near Yellowstone in the trailer. I guess I'll discover
any hidden problems then. Cross your fingers.
Again, how great to hear from someone, especially someone with the exact
same model as mine. I have quite a few pictures of the trailer if you're
interested. Just let me know.
    Happy Silver Streaking to you!
