I'd switch to a water pump and toss the compressor.

The regulator probably IS a self-switcher and it's switched. The reason the tag
says to "contact your dealer" is that those things are also used on mobile homes,
etc. where they use larger tanks (100#?) and you need to call the dealer to fill
the dead one. It's probably working just fine.
