Denny,
These isolators are solid state high-power switches (relays, if youwill) that
send power from the vehicle battery to the various lights on the trailerand are
controlled by the vehicle's lights. IE: When the vehicle turn signalflashes, it
operates this solid-state relay to send power to the trailer's signals.Same with
the taillights. Its purpose is to eliminate the heavy load from thetrailer
lights and prevent burning out something in the vehicle. The lightswitch and
signal switch (and flasher) are meant to only handle the load fromthe vehicle
lights.

They must not be TOO necessary, or they'd be in common usage. It seemslike I've
seen 'em in a catalog someplace, probably on the Internet, and I knowa fella who
has one in his Volkswagon (!). (It was there when he bought it.)
