tmeeker---My significant other has a special word for me.. she calls me
(sometimes affectionately) a big CHOE (rhymes with Joe) Because of my large
size and indelicate mannerisms. I'm trim, yet large and muscular at 6'2" and
about 210 Lbs. Mechanical devices fear me and try real hard to function
properly in my presence, but failing that, I occasionally have to take out
and replace a laggard mechanical minion. I respect the delicate and
ultra-lite weight features of our beloved 67 Safari, but occasionally things
break and rather than leave them broke, I try to repair and replace as best
I can--Your concern is appreciated -tod47d

The worm gear that raises the antenna on my '77 Sovereign gave up the ghost
last weekend. This is the one that is on the crank handle. The one it
engages with, that raises the antenna, doesnt look too hot either.

I understand that replacement kits are available? If so, where?

I have no idea who the manufacturer or model number are. It's the same
original antenna thats on all the other trailers around the same age.

There were some at the Airstream factory store in Jackson Center this
past June when I was through there on my way to International. You
might try giving them a call.

Unless things have changed, the factory store only ships to dealers... Why
not give your favorite dealer a call... A number of them are very deserving
of your business...

You need the Skyliner gear kit. Here is a picture of it.

The schematic for my Sovereign shows a 50 amp AGU fuse in
the lead between the battery's negative post and the fuse
panel. I found that at some point mine had been removed
and replaced with a large wire nut. Scary stuff.

In reworking that wiring, I used new 4 AWG cable and finally
found a fuse holder and the correct fuses at a local car
stereo shop. Some of the bigger stereos use 4 AWG for power
so the fuse holder I bought was sized to accommodate that
big of a cable. The stereo shop was also was the only place
I could find 40 and 50 amp AGU fuses.

Jimbo. We always have the 40AGU and 50AGU amp fuses, along with the old style
40 MDM, in stock.

Hey Dave,

Call Jay at Oasis RV Center in Tucson, AZ. He usually has them in stock and
if he doesn't, he can have them drop shipped directly to you from the
factory. I've found this dealership very responsive to my needs, regardless
of where I am on the continent. I always stop in to visit when in Arizona,
whether I need anything or not.

Jim,
I found an inline fuse holder that accepts 40-50 amp fuses, but I
don't know what the number is. One of the vendors at the Dayton
HamVention had 'em a couple of years ago.

The Ga Tech Office of Information Technology (and many others) say
that Netscape 7.0 is less vulnerable than the earlier versions, and is much
faster; they recommend to the Tech community that it be used instead of
IE. I can vouch for the faster part, not the vulnerability.

Subject: segments

Hello VAC,

I posted a message a few weeks ago regarding some segments that I am
searching for to fix my '61. Thanks to all of the folks that responded. So
far I haven't been able to locate what I need and have broadened my search
for perhaps a damaged Airstream that I can buy for parts. I need the rear
panels above the window on the curb side. So, if you know of a '58-63 that
is available for parts I would love to hear about it.

I would also be willing to have these pieces made if I can locate a
craftsman that can do this. I'm guessing that an English wheel is the needed
tool.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

Chris - where are you located?

I'm going to have to re-work/replace some panels on the Trailwind at some
point, top rear corner... compound curves, etc... someone put me onto this
guy, Kent White. His website:
http://www.tinmantech.com/html/kent_white.html

He conducts workshops/training seminars at his Nevada City, CA shop, and on
the road... I've been thinking that some of the serious Airstream
restorationists might get together and have him do a workshop for us.

You might check out some aircraft sheet-metal shops - you might be able to
persuade someone to knock out a couple of panels for you.

Keep us posted on your progress!

I second the suggestion to try an aircraft repair shop. I only had a
straight aluminum side panel replaced, but the shop I went to had just
finished replacing one of the small, curved sections above the rear window
on an early 50's A/S.
