Hello Terry,
I have used a PDA for the past couple of years to organize my life in
general. I can read email, check tasks, find appointments, keep track of
the kids, let my wife know when I will be out of town, write and read
memos, play cards, and beam my business card!. They are very useful and
very cool!

Hi RJ,

Yes, you've got that right. I now have one.

For those of us who travel year round and like having detailed data at
our
fingertips, I found what seems like a "bargain" while checking out the
local
Staples Store. Last week, I bought a PDA (a Handspring Visor Edge) for
$100.
It was selling for $400 last September.

Granted, it was on the clearance table, but as owner of several Vintage
Airstreams, the idea of buying electronic equipment that's a year old
(some
say obsolete) is right down my alley. Also on the table were Handspring
Visor accessories at up to 90% discount from a year ago.

What do I intend to do with this PDA?

So far, I've put names, addresses and phone numbers of all Airstream
dealers, Airstream parks and Vintage Parts suppliers on it. Next will be
all
RV Salvage Yards on the continent. After that, will be all Airstreamers
offering courtesy parking. Beyond that, I'm still thinking.

There's even a place to include "notes" with each address. My intention
is
to use it for the date and name of the mechanic who serviced my
Airstream, a
description of the work done, the cost, the warranty data and comments
about
my satisfaction with what he did.

Why am I doing this?

Instead of having to search for this kind of information in my memory or
my
stash trunk with the maps and other "stuff," I want this data
conveniently
and immediately available to me in my pocket when we're traveling.
Hopefully, it will help me to make better and more informed decisions.

Granted, this is another long term project and it probably says
something
about goals and dreams we have for continuing to enjoy the Airstream
lifestyle.

On an adjacent and frivolous topic, now that men's trousers have a
special
pocket for a PDA, I figured it's time for me to get with the program. I
don't want to become a dinosaur in my own time. Our kids chide me for
still
using my Apple IIgs, IIc and Imagewriter printer from the 1980s. Our
relatives chide us for having tow vehicles and Airstreams almost as old
as
their grandchildren. Buying something only one year old is a significant
departure from my usual style. <grin>

Hey Toby, I haven't learned how to "beam" data yet. Do you know you just
gave me another "to do" item? Nice guy. But when I learn how to do that,
I'll be happy to share notes. Of course, that means reciprocity - page for
page. <grin>

I went back to Staple's clearance table again. There were new things on it.
One was a "Handspring Eye Module" made for my PDA. That's another thing I
don't know how to use, but for $10, I now have a digital camera (of sorts).
I'm hoping to take pictures of my Vintage Airstream projects to share with
VAC members. Someday, I'll learn how to make my own website (someday in the
future - way in the future).

While at Staples, the PDA guy let me rummage through his entire inventory of
PDA items to be put on the table next week. I think I've got one or more of
everything compatible with my new Visor (at 75% or more discount).

The problem with all this is - there aren't enough hours in the day to
become skillful at using everything, plus continue restoring our Airstreams,
plus keep on exploring the continent, plus..., plus....

Enough grousing. I'm not adding any more new "to-do" items for awhile. The
spiders can resume their web making in my wallet.

it feels good - makes you feel like you're all star
trek and every thing - it's easy. go to the button
that looks like a pull-down menu (lower left of your
visor, upper icon) and hit it (from inside your trip
notes) and bang- it pulls down a little menu that says
"beam document" about 3 down. hit that and point your
infrared thingy at the other infrared thingy on the
other one and wammo.

I think the infrared glass on visors is on the left
side, but if you're sharing with a "Palm" model, the
infrared is normally on the top.

I tell you all this because I had to beam the first
day I got mine, and it makes you feel good when you
know how to do it the first time (which I didn't and I
felt not-geek-worthy for a minute.)

I'm about to try to fabricate some parts for my
trailer. BUT before I do, I've got some questions.

is an un-painted fiberglass piece translucent?

I'm thinking that I want to fabricate an original
looking 14x26 vent cover, and an original looking
interior ceiling light shade.

both have what appears to be fibers in them, and both
are (obviously) translucent.

Hi,
We have just purchased a 1969 Globetrotter, after replacing the front
section of bad floor, we took it out on it's maiden voyage and the
refrigerator is pulling out of it's cabinet. Pushed it partly back in and
screwed it down, it's moving out again. Any ideas what is going on? The
wood seems fine underneath. We can't seem to push it completely back in. No
bolts or screws seem to be in the way!~!

Thanks,

Karen

Tim,

Teflon tape would not keep a flaired fitting from leaking if that is
what you are looking to do. Actually, a compression fitting is a more
reliable fitting than a compression type nowadays. The flair could
develop a crack and it would then leak. I've never seen a compression
fitting crack yet.

Just remember that IF a compression fitting is leaking, *remove the
pressure before tightening* to stop the leak. There is not much chance
of ever stopping a leak on a pressurized water line that I know of.

Never! Flare fittings seal by the flare metal to metal contact. Teflon
tape will keep that from being a solid seal.

Use the tape on the fitting's threads, not on the flare surfaces.
I'm no pro plumber, but I don't see how the tape can hurt.

Toby. Fiberglass Astrodome covers will turn brown in short order. Also unless
painted, the sun breaks down the fiberglass in time.
The original covers that Airstream used, were made of fiberglass. As soon as
reasonable plastics became available, they quit the fiberglass.

Jeff. The upper fixed windows are called "vista view" windows. They are
available from any Airstream dealer.

Andy,
At what point did Airstream stop using the fiberglass Astrodome covers and
start using "reasonable plastics"? My 59 Ambassador has a clear
polycarbonate cover that is very crazed.
Thanks,

Did they start to peel in "short order?" or did they
start to peel after 25 years?

I've always been curious about those windows - seems
like they are part of the attraction to the 70's
models, and also part of the problem with the 70's
models.

For anyone who is interested in this vehicle, I
encourage you to respond OFF-list. Offering this for
sale on the list is perfectly fine - May I recommend
also putting an ad in the VAC Classifieds?

Teflon tape on the threads seals against no water. There are too many
other passages (like between the nut and the tubing), but the Teflon can
prevent the nut's threads from locking and so encourage the nut to
loosen from vibration. When the nut vibrates loose the connection sure
will leak.

Don. I do not have any info on that model. I will see what I perhaps can dig
up on it.

Colin. If I remember correctly, the fiberglass was last used in 62 or 63.
Sounds like someone has already replaced yours, many years ago.

Don. The double pane windows are history. They are replaced with single pane,
solar gray windows. Most of the clear glass is also no longer available.
Since they are all single pane, and the color is in the glass, there is
nothing to peel.
