That was the case with the track no my 69 Caravel. Late last year I
bought a 15 foot Zip Dee for it, cut it down to eight feet and mounted it.
Boy what a surprise when it came to feeding the welt into the slot. Along
with all the other stuff were remnants of an old awning of the type you9re
considering because there wasn9t a single hole in the skin from old
bracketry.
If I were to have gotten suck an awning, I might have ginned up some
sort of pole with a notch in one end that would accept the welt. Then with
my left hand holding the draw string (I think they come with them from the
factory), I would hold the welt in the slot with tension on that string
while I began to feed an inch or so of welt protruding past the pole, into
the track slot. I9d make the pole long enough to keep it somewhat in the
same place as I walked the draw string aft. This might entail several
repositionings of the pole on the welt but could eliminate having to break
out a ladder or stool at all.
I might make the pole as long as possible while still allowing stowage
beneath a berth, etc. Does any of this make any sense at all? Thoughts
anyone?
