Alternatively, you might try steaming the flange. If it wasn't intentionally
glued in place (which is quite possible) then it is likely a build up of
soil and gunk making it impossible to budge. Steam (or even hot water) might
penetrate the threads and loosen it up. The problem of course is getting
steam or hot water to the threads since they are under the flange. You might
try wrapping some old towels around the flange that have been soaked in
scalding hot water. Let them sit until they cool. Then put a bar on the
flange to turn it. The "bar" might simply be a hard wood stick with bolts
attached so that the bolts fit and lock into the flange to give you
leverage. I think there is actually a tool that does just that, but you can
save yourself the money by making one just for this application.
