As Bob writes this is vehicle specific. It's generally considered bad
to allow any vehicle's transmission to frequently jump in and out of
OD. My 2000 Ford PSD (7.3 liter, 373 gears) tends to do this when
towing at ~40-45 mph or when cycling through a series of hills. When
this occurs I turn off the OD. It's important , however, to remember
to shift back in to OD when conditions improve. Red lining the vehicle
for an extended period is way worse than gear jumping.
