On my 1966 Sovereign the handles simply pull straight down to remove. They are held in place by a spring-loaded ball. If you feel this process requires excessive force, it may be that the ball is immobilized by rust. Try a small amount of a good penetrating oil and try to work the handle up and down until it is free. Good luck! John Anderson
