If you go the hole route - I would think about a 9inch by about 24 inch if 
you have to cut out all the plumbing.  I would start with a small hole 
right under the valve - some of those valves can be rebuilt, so you may be 
able to separate the valve where the gate slides in - pull out the old, 
install the new.  Hope this makes sense - if not please let me know...... 
hopefully you'll get some other responses here that will help too.
