I think that your '73 is likely quite similar to my '78
Minuet 6.0 Metre in its fresh water plumbing.  There is a
"regulator" valve inside of the coach very close to the
water entrance that according to my manual operates to
prevent the problem you describe.  The one in my Minuet is
in the streetside corner of the rear wardrobe -- my '64
Overlander also has a very similar setup just inside of the
one-stop service compartment in the streetside corner.
