It seems I read somewhere about odd sounds coming from furnaces which needed
to have their air shutters on the main burner (probably right next to the
sparker) adjusted.  It would be an easy fix, if so.

Close it down for richer, open it up for leaner.  A nice, blue flame is the
desired end result.  Might be worth a try...you could always put it right back
where it was if it didn't help, and it's a lot easier than tearing stuff
apart!
