Joann,

The gas used to fumigate for termites is lethal not only to termites but 
also humans.  Humans can absorb the gas not only by breathing it but also by 
exposed skin which allows the poison gas to be absorbed into the body.

Many years ago exterminating companies used to place a security guard 
outside of tented houses and businesses but I can't remember the last time I 
saw anyone much less a security guard outside tented property.

With the skull and cross-bones signs placed for you or I would avoid the 
hazardous, lethal area but that can't be said for crooks with larceny in 
their hearts.

To get around the poisonous gas thieves will enter these opened properties 
dressed in wet suits, masks, air tanks and even booties on their feet to 
keep ALL skin covered from head to toe.  Thieves enter dressed to protect 
themselves and they exit with your property dressed like this.

I have a house that needs to be gassed in South Florida before we sell it 
and you can bet that I will be walking the property all night long with my 
protection by my side -- our rottweiler and a couple of guns, just in case. 
;)  I will probably take my nice utility trailer down there hooked behind 
the Excursion, these will be backed into the driveway so I can get out of 
the weather if it rains and I'll keep a supply of food for me and the 
rottweiler (unless she wants to catch some of her own!).

If you can't guard your own property while it's being tented, then give some 
thought to hiring a private security firm that is BONDED and INSURED just in 
case they aren't that inclined to stay awake all night long guarding YOUR 
stuff.

You can even hire off-duty police officers for this type of private 
detail -- ask your local sheriff or police department about "special duty" 
jobs their officers work all the time.  Hiring an actual police officer will 
cost more than the private security person but you'd have an excellent 
trained and competent guard for your property.
