I have a 64 Ambassador and went through the same thing several years ago
when I first acquired it, The solution turned out to be simple,
The stove top lifts from the front, hinged in the back, and just behind the
oven control behind the front panel there is a valve in the gas line to the
oven control that is operated by a screwdriver. As I recall, the stove and
the oven pilot will work whether this valve is open or not, however to
operate the oven burner, this valve must be open. It sounds to me this
valve is closed in your unit as it was in mine when I first brought it home.
