I've never been on a caravan through Mexico but I have traveled quite a bit,
both in Baja and on the mainland. I have a '63 Bambi and go by myself with
my dogs. And I've never had a problem - the friendliest, most helpful people
I have ever met. I wouldn't drive in Mexico City and I wouldn't travel
through any of the areas where drug trafficking is the primary industry, and
I don't drive at night or very fast, but it is a beautiful country with so
much to see that I wouldn't want to anyway! Thousands of people camp there
from the United States every year with very few problems. - Sherry

Matt,

The windows on our 1969 Intl Ambassador are NOT tempered glass, they were
not tempered back then or farther back.

The BEST thing anyone can do is to ADD window tint to the inside of your
glass which will keep it in place for the most part if it ever breaks -- and
they do now and then.

Tom,

I'll have to check out my '75 and '76 trailers and see if it had started
by then. I know when I needed a window in my '57 Bubble the repair shop
used Lexan to eliminate the time required to have a piece the proper
size tempered. Apparently that is now a requirement, even though it is
now illegal in most states to ride in the trailer. Surprisingly, back
in the '70s it was only illegal in 3 states, IIRC there is only 1 or 2
states now where it's legal.

Now that I think of it, my '75 Santa Fe had plate glass, our dog broke
her way out one time (presumably) rather than mess in the trailer.

The window tint film is a good idea.

By the way, I see you have a '73, Scott, not a '69. My bad.

Wonder when they switched to tempered...

Only John could come up with this great suggestion! Scott's wife is a

window, start a new trend Airstream classroom on wheels.

Maybe you're approaching this from the wrong direction. Put a small
frog and some bugs in there and you can have the only Airstream in your
neighborhood with a built-in terrarium. . . ;-)

The last time we had film developed at Sam's Club, they were able to give
us a CD as well as the photos printed... We X'd the box for the CD by
mistake and have one CD of pictures rattling around here someplace...
They may be able to send your negatives out for conversion to CD...
Actually anyone with a fairly modern scanner can scan photos....

Have fun....

I was snooping around eBay a few minutes ago and ran into this two-toned

I have no economic interest in this item, I just thought that it might
work well for one of you who might be outfitting your vintage Airstream with
authentic appointments.

It doesn't show too well in the photo but the tops/inside of the items
are turquoise and the outside/bottoms are a cocoa brown.

I have a set just like these but mine are yellow instead of turquoise
and they're way cool.

We have run into a few problems uploading Patti's pictures into the album,
thus the delay in adding descriptions. I do hope to enable this function
for Patti later today.

There have been some difficulties in using the album. Some of them resulted
from the way in which I originally configured the program, but the program
version was an early one, and it came with multiple bugs. I have now
downloaded a later version (several upgrades later) and am going to go ahead
sometime in the next few days and replace the existing version on the site.
Hopefully the new version will be more user friendly, and enable more of you
to use it.

Subject: [VAL] Update-Thanks for the help & some travel questions...

Good Morning,

Thanks to all who responded with suggestions for fixing my poor aging appliances. I'm
pleased to announce that they are (almost) all working now.

I ripped the Carlson out, cleaned all the gas valves and ran it in my yard on a
barbecue tank for 24 hours. I re-installed it and it seems to work fine. It doesn't get
quite as hot in the trailer as I had hoped, but on a night when the outside temp was
in the 20's, the lowest it went inside was 46. According to my high-low thermometer.
I may add a supplementary ceramic AC unit later.

I took the gas valve apart on the Bowen as well, cleaned it all up and reinstalled it.
I was extremely careful with all the delicate springs and gaskets. (Unusual for one as
ham handed as I) When I went to light it I had a small scare however: the gas control
unit was not sealed properly and flames crept from the pilot back to the valve. I was
bug-eyed to say the least. Tightened everything up, gave it the soapy water test, and
it's good to go.

I also found a small drip from my old bronze dump valve. The smallest black drip is
unacceptable, as you know. I took the valve off, cleaned everything, polished the gate
surface, re-placed the O ring and shimmed it slightly. When I reinstalled everything, I
was so happy to see it bone dry.

Of course when I was re-installing the belly panels I drilled a 1/8th hole DIRECTLY into
the sink/tub PVC drain pipe. I was too lazy to fix it properly so I just hose clamped it.

After all the drama, I decided to turn all my systems on at once and gloat. Can you
believe that the only thing I couldn't get working was my BRAND NEW Norcold fridge? I put
it in two years ago and never used it, except to test it. I'm afraid to fiddle with
something so modern. I'll have the trailer place look at it before I go.

Oh yeah, I also re-upholstered, got new curtains, carpeting, halogen lighting, Bose sound
system and a 23" Toshiba LCD TV! All this in preparation for a trip cross-country for a
month or two. New York to LA.

I will be taking a southern route and would love some suggestions about campgrounds, sights
to see, tips & tricks etc. I have no traveling experience..only a few weekend trips
fishing near here with my old Caravel years ago..

Thanks!

Courtney

You're almost there. The pilot valve should always be spring loaded up.
What you are doing is bypassing the thermocouple function with it sticking
down. Address the sticking function by cleaning the LPG goo from the valve
body ((usually held in place by a small plate and screws under the knob).
Then it's back to adjusting the pilot so it hits the thermocouple,
tightening up the thermocouple fittings, or replacing the thermocouple.

I had a 1970 model with the same problem, I solved mine by breaking out the inside window,
this must be done carefully, first I removed the plastic shroud around the glass, using an
electric drill I started drilling a 1/8" hole at the bottom corner of the inside glass,
drill at a low speed, the drill is used to weaken the glass at that spot, the drilling will
take some time because they are not made to drill glass, the drill will make an indentation
in the glass, using a center punch with a point smaller than the hole tap lightly until the
glass shatters, be careful of flying glass. after glass is cleaned up I used caulking to fill
the gap between the remaining glass and frame, after caulking dries replace the plastic shroud.

Bill,

Believe me, Patti's vintage ?Airstream looks a lot "cooler" up close and
personal. It is all in the details and the vintage "stuff" Patti has been
able to get working again for her little slice of Heaven is really
appreciated in person.

Can you see that old toaster on the kitchen counter? That's from the 50's
and I think she rewired it and it works like or better than new, and
certainly IS better quality than the junk we buy today in comparison.

All I can say is: "Patti, I WANT your wheels" but I'll leave you the
trailer." (I wish)

Hello everyone,

I took myself off list earlier this year, but being stranded at home by
winter thought I'd get back on.

I'm late getting into the window question, but can tell you for certain that
Airstream tempered glass windows were introduced with the 1966 models. From
'66 through '68 the glass was "Corning AS-2 solid 5H Chemically tempered m1
safety plate," and starting in 1969 Airstream began using safety laminate.
This doesn't mean that your trailers from the '70's all have tempered or
laminate safety glass because previous owners may have replaced them with
something less, and your front wrap around windows may be plastic. That I do
not know. Although I do not own a '70's model, I recently examined the
original windows on a 1970 Tradewind, and on each pane of glass, in the
lower left or right corner I could read that it was a safety laminated
glass. I wish I'd written down exactly what it said, but I am satisfied that
safety laminate is OEM. Also, being a safety laminate, the inner and outer
layers are tempered glass with a film of plastic inbetween.

This topic has come up on the list before, but the consensus seems to be
that prior to 1966 the glass used was a single strength (3/32" thick) flat
float glass, the same as you can get from nearly any hardware store. Repair
shops may well be reluctant to replace broken windows from that earlier era
with OEM because of Federal transpotation regulations. However, this may
just be an excuse - I doubt the regulations are retroactive. Instead, I bet
repair shops replace glass with plastic for liability reasons, and because
it is simply easier and safer to work with.
