I think what confuses most is that an RV toilet is very similar to its
housebound cousins, but different in some aspects.
See the images here:
http://www.vintageairstream.com/rr_topics_toilet.html

You can see the old toilets used a big honkin' seal and the newer ones come
with a smaller seal that mimics a wax ring seal. I guess the idea is that
an RV toilet is subjected to a wide range of temperature extremes that could
affect the paraffin wax seal. As you can see in the pictures, nothing would
prevent you from sticking a wax ring seal on the toilet pipe - it would mate
right down onto the flange.

Best of luck,

"Most battery chargers add some AC ripple depending on the battery to
clean it up enough for most uses. Radios are most sensitive to that
ripple.
The classic Univolt also has an acoustical hum that annoys many,
especially when its under their bed at night."

Thanks, Dr. J.! this must be the problem. The coach doesn't have a battery!
Having read about potential bad interactions between the Univolt and batteries,
I wasn't in a hurry to fix this and put it on the spring fix-up projects list.
The ground wire doesn't have a terminal post connector, and the slide-out
battery tray is broken.

The Univolt acoustical hum doesn't bother me. The Univolt is in the bottom of
the bathroom closet, so I keep the sliding bathroom door closed.

Are there any additional ill effects of operating the Univolt without a battery?
Does anyone know what battery group size fits in the Argosy battery compartment?

    All,

To all who kindly responded to my call for toilet gasket help, a great
big thanks.

The item, a Closet Flange Seal, is ordered and winging its way to me as
I type this. With that last critical part, I can at last reinstall my
Thetford toilet and come out of the closet once and for all. ; - )

    All,

Today I have a silly little item to pass on to others. It's a well
loved 1969 Eastern United States road map in passable condition with a trip
marked by the original owner from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada to Fort
Lauderdale, Florida. Or is it from Fort Lauderdale to Sudbury?

In any event, if you think this would be a nice addition to your vintage
Airstream, it's yours just for the asking IF you're the first to ask. This
is such a small item, I'll even cover the postage.

Respond and I'll email you back for your postal address, that's it!

    Good luck,

    All,

I have a set of six used (I wire brushed them clean) stove grate clips
for someone who might need them for their Airstream.

If you're the first to respond, I'll send them your way and even cover
the postage.

    Tom.

I took the numbers that Gerald supplied shown below.

The rubber is listed as CP Products, 9/16" thick foam rubber. CP #02125.
In this Byerely RV catalog its their catalog number 20676 and they ask
$2.99. 800-876-2627 From catalog edition #0157. Whether they actually have
it, I don't know and they are 400 miles from here so I can't handily drop in
and check. They also have other gaskets for specific toilets that may not
connect to the standard closet flange.

    The translation is: P/N 20676, shoe'nuf 9/16" thick, priced at $2.99 by
calling 800.876.2627. They took my Visa card and charged me $7.75 to ship
from Visalia CA but have warehouses all over the country.

You might be getting some radio frequency harmonics off that old Univolt.
It's a lot of history. The other week I was looking at a power transformer
that was driving some halogen lights in the kitchen. My wife unplugged it
and the wall wart fell apart causing it to blow a fuse. I really never
thought much about it before, but that little box was putting out 5 amps at
12 volts. The usuall big wart maxes out at about .5 amps. I got on the net
to find out how they do this. The new technology is a switching power
supply that opperates at a frequency above human hearing. I think most run
at 30000 Hz. The high frequency makes them small and very efficient. Might
be time to look at an upgrade.

You did not say if you are on AM or FM. I ripped the ferrite cores out of
about 6 AM radios, and made an antenna that is very selective. It filters
out a lot of the dirty electricity we have around here. I just used the
right amount of windings with a tuning capacitor.

I don't have any answers for you, but this new tchnology (at least for me)
is very interesting. I'm trying to filter one to run a motorola bag phone,
but I have not had much luck. There is a soft start circuitry that seems to
make it not work with a 3W phone. Just guessing. Most of the new laptops
are using the new transformers. These transformers are capable of many more
amps.

I had a question as to what the original toilet in a 1951 Silver Streak might
have looked like.

There is a picture of a folding toilet in a 1951 Silver Streak Clipper at :
http://www.airstream.dk/1951%20Silver%20Streak%2022%20-%20toalet.jpg.

Does anyone know if this was original?

Hello All,

I was thinking how nice my 63 Globetrotter would look with a nice Zip Dee
awning. Then I started thinking how many days I'd be eating tuna fish until
it was paid for.

How much does one of those things cost anyway? Is there a source for a used
one?

Thanks!

    All,

I'd love to access the space beneath and aft of my curbside pullout
berth more easily and to that end, it occurred to me to find a used access
door and install it. The problem is that it would have to be located right
on the rib at the end cap, what I understand to be a no-no. There's not
enough room to move forward without hitting the wheel well or I'd do that.
Hey, these Caravels are tiny.

Then I was cruising the Vintage Airstream Photo Archives and ran across
this 1971 Caravel.

Note the outside access door.....right on the end cap seam. Isn't there
a rib there? Did these models have gussets added for strength? Couldn't I
do the same thing on my '69? Also note the next two larger models. They
also have a access doors in the same place.

    Thoughts anyone?

Hi Glyn:'
When I redid Bubbles, which already had a rear hatch that opened
into the dead space under the then-existing rear bed - I walled off
that area to product a outside access only storage space. Since it was
walled off completely from the interior, I can stow sticky stuff like
fishing waders & boots, utility items like jack stands and hoses and I
even have a small ladder in there. And a nifty little florescent light.
I'll send you some pics. Perhaps you can do something similar?

If the rib ends at the frame for the door, the frame takes the load and
passes it down to the floor level. Actually, the door frame is probably
stronger than the rib by itself.

You'd need to see what you wanted to cut out of the skin, where or what
you'd need to cut out of the rib if not remove the end of the rib all
together, then build in the door frame so it takes the downward load from
the rib. The entire opening will then be stronger once the door itself is
installed.

To paint you a better picture, it's like installing a window in a solid wall
that has studs placed every 16" on center and your window opening is 24"
wide, therefore you'd be cutting into 2 studs and building the strength back
into the original design.

See?

Easy! ;))

By the way, of course you'd NEVER drive the Airstream with a hole in the
side so that the rib end flexes in the breeze! You'd need to complete this
job once you began cutting out material.
