Subject: [VAL] AOL situation

The list digest apparently continues to be delivered without bouncing back
from AOL subscribers.

A few Individual messages continue to bounce back. They seem to be sporatic.
I have been forwarding the bounced messages to the affected subscribers
separately from the list mailings, but will no longer be doing so. Effective
as of today, AOL bounces will be treated the same as all bounces. That is, if
mail bounces for three straight days, the address may be removed from the
mailing list.

This removal may cause problems for those AOL list members whose individual
mailings are currently being delivered. Right now, about five AOL addresses
are bouncing. When those five are removed, there is no guarantee that five
different addresses may not start bouncing in their place.

For information, following is a reply I sent to one of the affected AOL
subscribers this morning. It does offer choices for affected AOL
subscribers.

It does seem sporatic. I have been trying to get under the supposed AOL spam
limit of five messages, but some come back anyway. I have spent a great deal
of time trying to resolve the problem, but at this point I am no longer going
to try and correct the situation, as I now see it as a problem between AOL and
their subscribers.

I can only suggest several things:

1.) Complain to AOL and tell them you do NOT want your mail blocked from
tompatterson.com. If they ask, the mail is coming from IP address
66.221.219.254, which is located on C I Host. You might tell AOL that this is
not a commercial list, nor is it spam. As a non-commercial list, the only
parties who suffer from non-delivery are you, the list subscriber and of
course AOL, as likely they will lose some subscribers due to their policies.
The list will continue without AOL.

2.)Obtain another e-mail address from which to receive your Vintage list
e-mail. There are a number of free providers of e-mail addresses, such as and
including Hotmail and Yahoo.

3.)Go to a different provider than AOL.

4.)Subscribe to the digest rather than individual e-mails. The digests
currently appear to be going through without bounces. To change to digest
form, go to the list office at:

It would seem AOL can't allow more that a cluster of 5 messages but I can
receive 15(yes 15) bogus "lottery winning notifications" and countless Nigerian
oil ministers who want to share millions of ill gotten gains emails....
Thanks again Tom for all your extra effort so that we AOlers can receive our
daily
list info...

Hello everyone,

I'm wondering what kind of waste water disposal the 1964 Tradewinds
came with? Where is the grey water supposed to go? If there is no
greywater tank, can one be added? How do others deal with this?
Just wondering,
Marie

Basically, there are three alternatives to dealing with the
"wash water" disposal in a '64 Vintage Airstream:

1. Utilize one of the portable "blue-tote" tanks to collect
the "wash water". Other than the storage issue when the
tank isn't in use, it is a workable solution.

2. A "wash water" tank can be added, but it can be
something of a complexity. Eventually, I plan to have my
regular Airstream dealer add "wash water" tanks to both of
my coaches - - even the Minuet doesn't have a tank that
collects water from the shower.

3. If your Tradewind is like my '64 Overlander, the owner's
manual suggests a solution that works, but is somewhat
messy. It is possible to back-up the wash water into the
under-floor blackwater tank by placing a "solid termination
cap" on the sewer outlet and then opening the blackwater
tank gate valve - - the "wash water" will then back up into
the blackwater tank. The problems are two-fold; first, you
will quickly fill the blackwater tank when it is used for
both blackwater and "wash water"; and second, when it comes
time to dump the holding tank, there will be waste trapped
between the gate valve and the termination cap that will
need to be caught in some type of receptacle when the
termination cap is removed (and don't forget to close the
blackwater tank gate valve before trying to remove the
temination cap when using this method).

Good luck with your investigation!

In the 60s it was standard Airstream procedure to irrigate the camp ground
directly with the gray water. For disposing of both gray and black water the
manual suggests where acceptable to dig a gopher hole and dump both into
that gopher hole, refilling the hole with dirt when leaving the camp. Otherwise
one can gather the gray water in a portable tank or bucket and haul it
separately or force it into the black water tank (though detergents will remove
lubricants from the valve) by keeping the drain cap on and opening the valve
to the black water tank. The gray water connects to the drain line below the
black water drain valve.

In modern camp grounds with hookups, one just puts on the pipes and drains
gray water immediately to the hookup. Black water needs to gather in the
blackwater tank to soften the solids for periodic disposal. Otherwise one can
use a 6 gallon or so tank on wheels to catch the dish and shower water and
haul that to the dumping station as needed. One learns to be frugal with fresh
water that way and to go use the campground facilities as much as possible.

Adding a gray water tank is possible, some have done it with a maze of 4" pipes
under the belly. Getting shower water to the gray water tank is the biggest
problem along with a tank at the rear can upset the trailer fore and aft balance
and in some models add to bending the frame.

Years ago, before we got carried away, we would keep the grass green
and the trees growing.
We did not camp on concrete pads. We camped in the woods. If you
were in a tent what would you do with your dish wash water? The little
gophers were our friends ....
