Subject: [VAL] Update on AOL problem

The problem with Vintage Airstream list messages destined for AOL subscribers
continues. This affects everyone on the list who has an AOL account as well
as those with a Netscape account. There may be other ISP's which are also
owned by AOL which are also affected.

I have spoken with both my server host, C I Host and AOL trying to get the
problem resolved, but it is still with us. The problem seems to have arisen
because AOL placed several measures into effect to limit spam and viruses, and
C I Host was unable, or unwilling to go along with the AOL requirements. This
has resulted in AOL blocking messages originating from C I Host accounts from
their subscribers.

C I Host tells me that they have taken some measures to comply with the AOL
requirements, and suggested that I might also try a bulk mailer program to
split the messages up into groups of five or fewer so as to get around the AOL
designation of messages going to more than five or their subscribers as spam.

AOL told me that they were sorry that I was caught in the middle, and
suggested that I could always use a different server host.
This suggestion raises my hackles, and is also not too practical since I have
paid for the hosting charges for a year in advance in order to get a lower
price.

I did spend most of yesterday installing a bulk mailer and setting it up to
handle the individual list messages. It is operating with mixed results.
Some messages are getting through to AOL subscribers, but many are still being
blocked. I did not set it up for the daily digest, hoping that the C I Host
changes would take care of the digest. They did not, and many of the digest
messages bounced back to me this morning. I have now changed the handling of
these messages over to the bulk mailer.

At this point, I have almost reached the extent of what I can do. I will call
both C I Host and AOL today to see if there is any change, but other than that
I have no plans to take further actions.

It does appear that at least one individual on the list started getting his
messages from AOL when he complained directly to AOL, and those who start
missing their messages might also try this approach. Be aware that the
blocking is sporatic. You might be getting some messages and think that you
do not have a problem. However, this does not mean that all of your messages
were not blocked, and indeed some of them may have been blocked.

I do post both the individual messages (edited) and the daily digests
(unedited) on my website, and you can always go there to view messages if you
feel that you are missing any. The problem is that the postings to the
website are done on an irregular basis so that them might not always be
up-to-date. As of this morning however, they are up-to-date.

Finally, I am receiving a barrage of returned mail as a result of the problem.
Normally, when I receive these bounces from a subscriber for three days in
succession, that subscriber is removed from the list. I am easing up on this
policy for the time being, but at some point I am going to have to start
removing subscribers whose mail is returned, as the number of bounces is hard
for me to handle on an ongoing basis. If the AOL problem cannot be resolved,
we may end up without any AOL subscribers on the list.

This message is being sent to the list, and again separately to all AOL
subscribers on the list.

Hola Tom;
This seems to be an interesting problem in the commerce sense. If AOL is
not willing
To help solve this nonsense, maybe a lot of subs will drop them and go
someplace else.
In fact, I encourage this action to AOL subs. There are other ways for
individual to
Stop spam. Maybe when they see the money stop arriving at their lap, they
will think
Differently.

Bill,
Thank you for sharing that. Do you think my husband will let me do that to
my trailer?! It was nice to see that the auction benefitted charity. I am
now forwarding picture to my friend who has a Hello Kitty toaster, vacuum
cleaner & many other asst'd items.

Subject: [VAL] Cargo Shifting: Revere Ware Percolator

    All,

Tonight I'm offering a lovely Revere Ware 8-cup coffee percolator to one
lucky member of the list.

If you think you can use this percolator, only want it for yourself and
not for resale and are the first to respond to this email, it's yours for
the asking.

OK, here's what you get. The highly polished pot, all the innerds, the
lid and the sight glass on the top. The Bakelite handle is not chipped yet
has the appearance of being vintage. Also the sight glass is loose in the
lid. It fits, it just doesn't tighten down when rotated. It'll work just
fine if actually used to make coffee.

In addition, I'll include another 8-cup pot (with cup markings running
down the side under the handle, way cool) and the stainless steel stem.
There's no second basket, basket top or pot lid. The sight glass is missing
too.

Do not confuse this second offer with the first one. If you respond,
you'll get a complete highly polished (I know, I polished it myself) Revere
Ware percolator with the spares thrown in too. The other parts should be
thought of only as spares. The spare pot is not polished, it's just the way
I got it.

The polished lid on the first pot is a bit tight, having come with the
spare pot. I polished it only then to find that it was a very tight fit on
the other pot. If you have a buffing wheel you can bring the spare back to
like-new and swap the innards around.

Bottom line is that I'm offering enough parts to make a great accessory
for your Airstream or kitchen and some spares.

All I ask is that you agree to cover the postage it'll take to mail it
to you and if you've already had cargo shifted your way from me, let someone
else have a crack at it, thanks.

I bought a total of three identical pots, have what I want from them and
am now letting the rest go.

    Good luck,

Just a note to let you know where the adventure is.

I'm mooching off my aunt in Philadelphia, parked in her driveway in
front of her mansion, ruining the high tone of the neighborhood. I am
being spoiled rotten.

Heading for western VA tomorrow, and then eastern VA, then ????

Tomorrow I have to get out of the driveway, I may need some vaseline to
get out the gate....

Where did the sun go ? Is there any sun in FL ?

You know I was just thinking tire pressure monitoring systems just
the other day myself. I seem to recall that Consumer Reports
tested 2 or 3 different aftermarket units in their 'once over'
section and found one that worked better and was less expensive
than the others. Anybody have their issues of Consumer Reports in
an organized fashion that could look that up real quick? I know I
have my own copy of that issue here somewhere (rustle, rustle,
    flutter, crash, bang, oops!).

Have used it on my 69 caravel and 2002 Toyota Sienna. Six tire
senders but will monitor more. Had a little trouble getting the
sensors to seat. Had to change out valve stems. Replaced with steel
valve stems. They had an upgrade and last week they sent me a credit
for the full amount of the upgrade. Do not know why the upgrade. A
few times it seemed that the sensors did not have enough signal
strenght to reach the monitor in the van. System monitored each tire
and indicated the air pressure in each tire on the monitor. If there
was a decrease in pressure the monitor would beep and flash.
There was a need to have a better mounting in the van than was
provided. Couple of strips of velcro. Can not evaluate the upgrade
but I was somewhat satisfied with the old system. I traveledlabout
1500 miles and it provided a sense of security with the one axle
Caravel.
I have seen several in which tires blew and the wheel well as well as
the back skin needed a great deal of repair.
