It may take a penetrating oil to get to the squeak. WD-40 doesn't have much
lubricant, I think its mostly distillate components closely related to kerosene.
Real oil will gather dust. The local overhead door company recommends PB
Blaster penetrating liquid as lubricant for overhead door torsion springs and
rollers. Doesn't leave much oil to gather dust.

A graphited or teflonned penetrating oil could be effective. I used plain oil on
my Caravel.

    All,

As usual, thanks for the help nailing down the 1176 bulb number for my
cone lights. I just got off the phone a few minutes ago and ordered a box
(10) of them from my local independent auto parts store. I'll pick them up
late this afternoon and have well light interior by nightfall.

Can anyone tell me what the overhead light fixture in the head should
look like in my Caravel? The one that's there is pretty darned new looking
and appears to only have been there a short while.

There is a hole match-drilled and through-drilled into both bi-fold
doors in the head. Is that factory for holding the door open against the
forward bulkhead with a bolt and wing nut of was that someone's idea along
down the ownership line?

I now have scanned photos of the completed interior for anyone
interested. Please contact me back channel to see them.

    Thanks,

The three ceiling fixtures in my '68 Caravel are identical. One in the head, one at
the galley and one up front. Squareish, four back up light lamps around the
square, one in each compass direction, rotary switch to select 1, 2, or 4 in the
middle holding up the translucent cover.

The folding door to my head has a strap with snaps to hold it open. At least
used to have that.

Subject: [VAL] Salt Corrosion

Hello All,
I've just finished refastening the belly skin of my '56 Caravanner. Before I
bought it, it must have been exposed to salted roads, since when I polished
it there was a lot more pitting down low and in the front than anywhere
else. As I was refastening the bottom, I noticed that there is also a
covering of white flaky corrosion on the aluminum belly skin. I don't want
this to get worse. Does anyone know of a solution I can mix or buy to remove
the residual salt from the aluminum and stop it from eating more every time
it gets wet?
Thanks,
Brian Jenkins

    Gerald,

Thanks, I'll look again in the head for the tell tale mounting holes for
the square fixture. I even have two spares identical to what you describe,
one of which I could mount in there.

    Brian,

My first guess is that what you're seeing is aluminum oxide and unless
you plan to polish the bottom, I'd be tempted to leave it after brushing off
the excess. That oxide protects the rest of the metal from getting eaten up
by the elements.

Tom,

A consensus seems to be developing that SV35AC from Napier Environmental
Technologies (available at www.aircraftspruce.com, among others) is the way to go.
I tried a couple of products, and this one was hands-down the easiest to use, as
well as being the least toxic.

Tom,
Use Paint stripper from Home Depot, or Aircraft
Stripper ( Napier Removeall) from Aircraft Spruce.

Tom,

I used Bix stripper from Home Depot. Its a spray on chemcial that you spray
onto the trailer and let it setup a few minutes and hose off. Some stubborn
areas may require two passes or light scraping with a plastic putty knife.

Read the instructions and follow them closely. And don't get it on anything
plastic that you intended to keep. Wear gloves and eye protection.

Tom,
You must not be on Plaxo. I just got on that and it sent out a blanket
information request, which I thought was only going to other Plaxo members!
Oh well!
We have a 1981 31 ft Excella 500. It will be vintage when we retire in '06.
We sold a 1971 23 ft LY Safari when we purchased this one. Our WBCCI # is
26925. We have replaced all the uphostery (sp?) and curtains in the unit. we
also pulled out the 23 year old carpet (couldn't get rid of the smell) and
replaced it with linolium (sp?) tile to make it easier to keep clean. Have
put down area rugs in bedroom and living room.
Hope to run into you some time (figuratively speaking, of course). I enjoy
your writing and comments on airstreaming.
we are hoping to go full time when we retire.
Thanks for the reply to my "request".

My apologies.
I didn't realize I was sending to the whole list, but in answer to the
question "What's Plaxo?", I'll send one more communication.
Plaxo is a product that syncronizes your address book and keeps it updated
with all other users of Plaxo.
That's the short version. For more info go to Plaxo.com.
I am not affiliated in anyway with this company.

Brian

I doubt that it is salt corrosion - probably just normal rusting of the
belly pan. I too would scrape it off, it there is a lot of it, I would
just replace the (or at least parts of) the belly pan.

The problem with that sort of program is that it has the List address, and
when it tries to synchronize, it sends the message to the entire List.

The only solution is to delete the List from your address list, and enter it
manually when you need it.
