You said you used two Olympic rivets and then decided not to use that style
anymore - I'm interested in why not?

And a related question for everyone on the list - I remember seeing some
photos somewhere on someone's web site showing how to trim one of the "legs"
of an Olympic rivet so it can be used next to a frame member - does anyone
know where this can be found?

Thanks,

Subject: Re: [VAL] Olympic Rivets

    Deborah,

Given that the rest of the rivets I plan to install will allow access
from behind, I would prefer using conventional (Cherry?) rivets. I have
bought all the necessary tools to do this including a proper sized air
compressor that now requires me to improve the electrical service to the
garage for it to operate beyond 40 PSI, where it now pops the circuit
breaker, an air impact air hammer with rivet stem and a bucking bar.

I might add that I owe a lot to Uwe for setting me straight on what to
buy and where when it came to the tools and rivets.

As some of you know, I'll be adding an access door to the curbside just
aft of the wheel well which will allow the large and dusty space under the
berth and outboard of the plastic tubs to be used for the first time in 36
years. I actually have a door that I could put in now but bought it before
doing my homework. It turns out to be from the mid 1980's and would not be
visually correct on my 1969 Caravel. I'm currently arranging for the proper
door with correct Chicago pop out lock for that installation. I hope
getting this door really does happen because this particular task has been
dragging on too long.

As far as the two Olympic rivets I did use the other day are concerned,
I may well replace them with conventional rivets some time on down the line
but wanted to get them into the holes I drilled at the end of the 1" long
skin tears adjacent to the top corners of my Bowen water heater cutout. I
wanted to just get them in and move on to my next project, sweating two
leaks I've found at joints in the copper water line. I'm sure I'll
eventually remove the entire heater for the sake of access to the rear of
those two rivets with a bucking bar so as to replace them but just not now.

It strikes me as funny for me to go to such lengths for these skin tears
and those tow little rivets because the Caravel is in place at the back of
the property with no plans for us to ever move from that spot as long as we
own her. I guess what it boils down to is that I'm doing it long term for
the next owner many, many years from now.

So far as trimming the legs of an Olympic rivet goes, I'd like to read
that one myself. When installing them at the water heater the other day, I
noticed an empty hole in the skin where a factory installed rivet had been.
I inserted an Olympic rivet there but it quickly bottomed out on something
behind it. Eventually I'd like to get some sort of rivet in there too.

    Regards,

    Glyn

You have a source for the Oddie door fastners?!? This is the first time in

there are several people that are in need of these cabinet door fastners. I
wouldn't mind having an extra on hand, with the kids, you never know.

If I have it right, the Oddie door fastner is the latch used on the closet
doors of the late 50's through mid 60's models. It is the knob that you turn
to open and close your closet doors.

I just ordered a couple of tubes of Vulkem for an Awning project I have

unused portion in the tube will harden. My project will probably take less
than a tube, so what's left will be a loss. Is there a way that anyone has
found to seal the tube to stop the remaining Vulkem in the tube from
hardening.

I just put a nail in the end of it, the size of the opening I cut.

Then put it in a freezer bag and stick the whole thing in the freezer. When I need
to use it, I just set it out for a half hour before I need it. Then when done put it back in the freezer.

I have been able to keep one usable for several months this way.

And to think I thought that all quarter turn fasteners were from DZUS.
http://www.dfcis.com
http://www.milspecproducts.com/disclaimer.htm
http://www.dzus.com/Live/Dzus/CMS.nsf/Site/Home/Contacts/Key_Contacts
http://www.paneloc.com/bifix.htm

Now they fight over the name and the products. The fundamental patents
must have expired so many make similar but probably not interchangeable
parts.

    Joann,

As you'll remember on the trip down when we bought the Caravel in
Sacramento we had a rented U-Haul 14 foot box truck hooked to her when we
pulled up in front of your place. That's because Marilyn drives a 1991
Toyota Celica and I have a 1995 Toyota Camry wagon, neither one of which is
capable of pulling that kind of a load.

Our long-term plans include first replacing the Celica with a Toyota
Prius within the next year or two and then replacing the Camry with a Prius
wagon if Toyota ever chooses to make one. Clearly neither one of those
vehicles are up to pulling my 3,000 pound (now) '69 Caravel either. Anyway
we've always had a small trailer at the back of the property as overflow for
family and friends. Kids just love the idea of "camping" in them and to
that end, I'll get the pressurized water leaks sweated and then T into our
existing domestic sewer line so the Caravel will be completely self
sufficient. My next door neighbor is a former plumber and has agreed to
supervise a crew to trench and install the ABS plumbing, water trap, etc.

In all the years we had other trailers and bigger cars we towed them
quite infrequently. I think one trip to Yosemite and a few to a state beach
campgrounds 45 minutes north of us on the Pacific Coast Highway.

    Regards,

    Glyn

I will be caravanning in with the Wagon Wheels Caravan, and
just checked the information that I have and all of my
information basically indicates that the pre-rally site will
be announced cloer to time for the International. I believe
in the past, the actual pre-rally site was typically
announced about 45 to 60 days prior to the International
Rally via the VAC website as well as publication in the
Vintage Advantage -- I can't remember where I heard this (so
it may not be correct), but seem to remember mention being
made that a newsletter may be sent out to VAC membership
prior to the International Rally rather than a full copy of
the Vintage Advantage.

Hello,
I am looking for a window for a '69 International, the window is the
swing out portion on the curb side, located to the right of the door. The
window is 18 5/8 x 22 1/4.

If anyone has a lead on one please contact me.

I managed to get most of the twist put in the frame when it was broken
into. I am going to try one more time to remedy the problem. If that doesn't
work. I may have to get one from Andy at Inland RV.

     Thanks for your time.

The rumor of a newsletter with all important info is
actually true.

I just send the mailing labels to Bob Herman, so he better
be doing something with them :]

I do have some preliminary info, but I better wait for the
officials to say something in case there have been changes
in the plan.

If you are wondering what we're talking about, the Vintage
Club gathers at a place with in a few miles of the
International Rally site the night before we are due in, and
then we all line up and the cops come and stop traffic and
we parade through the streets of Springfield MO, a whole
line of elderly trailers, gleaming in the sun, flags flying.
It is too cool to see and even better to be a part of.

The camping the night before is sometimes boondocking and
sometimes in a campground with services, and there is always
a small fee ( to bribe the police ?)

When Bob has recovered from mailing out the newsletter, I'm
sure he will say something here !

If you are coming to International, this parade is one of
the best parts !!! So join us !

Subject: [VAL] Cargo Shifting: Stainless steel Bowen water heater door.

    All,

PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE NOTE FIRST BEFORE RESPONDING.

I have two complete Bowen water heaters. I purchased my '69 Caravel a
few years ago with a non-working Bowen G6A-1 water heater already in it and
have a G6A-2 in the garage that I recently bought on eBay. I made the
installed one work from the parts of the two and now want to share a spare
door with the List from the G6A-2.

OK, here's the deal. If you, and I mean if YOU really need this door
for your own Airstream Bowen G6A-1 or -2 water heater and are the first to
respond AFTER YOU HAVE FIRST MEASURED YOUR HEATER and compared it to the
measurements I'll show below, I'll send it to you for the asking.

I'm told that these doors are as scarce as hens teeth so it would be
very cool for one of you to benefit from my extra door.

As with all my Cargo Shifting, there's no charge for it, I just ask that
you agree to cover the postage and at that, only after you've gotten it and
are happy with it.

Here are the measurements of mine that I ask you to compare first to
your needs before asking for it.

    Door width = 18"
    Door height = 14 9/16"
    Cutout height = 5"
    Cutout width = 7 13/16"
Distance of cutout from left side of door edge = 1 5/8"
Distance of cutout from top of door edge = 1"
    Height of slot = 1"
Distance of slot from left side of door edge = 10 1/2"
Distance of slot from top of door edge = 1"

The door is in pretty darned good shape with no scratching on its
brushed stainless steel surface. There is a very minor 1" vertical dent in
the metal coincident with the right hinge arm. If you have a Bowen, you'll
know what I mean.

There is no pilot lighting hole in the door, it must be a design
predating that feature. I'm assuming that my Bowen G6A-1 water heater is
the original on my 1969 Caravel so this G6A-2 door might be from a slightly
newer heater but is identical to the one I already have.

    Good luck,

    Glyn Judson

For those who have not received their April Blue Beret's yet, here are a
couple of items of interest from the presidents corner.

Bus service between the rally site and the downtown Expo Center will be
limted to the opening ceremony plus all evening programs. ..... Members
who have relied on the WBCCI shuttle bus service during the day need to
bring a vehicle or arrange to ride with other attendees. Seems Missouri
doesn't allow school buses to transport adults. So they've contracted
with the city at twice the cost for limited transportation.

I have been asked to let all canine aawners know that canine parking
will be strictly enforced at the International Rally this year.

Food for thought and planning.

Most likely people other than Wally didn't *know* they could take their dogs

in the days when luxuries weren't common for "common folk". Not many people
had a stash of cash to spend on their animals like we do for ours today that
I have read about. Of course, since I'm just a youngster myself I didn't
know anyone personally who did either.

Could it be that due to Wally and other pet owners that we have the *rulz*
we have today where we are almost made to ride "in the back of the trailers"
or at least to park in the back of the park? Nah .... but some part of our
society caused us trailerites to not only be thought of as "trailer trash"
but now our animals get "trashed", too? Tain't fair!

Only the 350 can be had with dual tires.

First thing you need is a towing rating more than 6200 pounds. Probably
figure at least 7500 pounds to allow for the stuff you will add to the
trailer. Maybe more.

Dual tires are mostly needed when the trailer weight on the truck is
high. That's more likely in a 5th wheel, than a normal Airstream. The
added width is a pain finding more curbs to hit and fewer passages it
can go through. The added tires add maintenance and don't quite add
their total load capability because two tires don't ever have exactly
the same diameter. Sometimes larger trucks stick with large wide singles
rather than duals because of these details.

If they have a canine section, what about a cat section. Or if you have both
cats and dogs a dog/cat section. You deficiently need an old people section
and then and old people section with dogs or dogs and cats. Of course you
have a have a section for people with kids and then people with kids and
dogs and/or cats. What about a singles section.

Bottom line you don't need to separate people, just require that "people" be
responsible. If they are not, they are out. My 2/cents.

Hi Dick,

I have an F-250 and I love it, great puller.

Forget about the dually truck, you really only need duallies for fifth wheel
and gooseneck trailers....to support the pin weight.

Is it at all possible to "try out" a satellite TV service without a 2-year
commitment?

I very much want to install a dish on top of our 34' Airstream, depending on
price it will either be manual or automatic (but I can aim a dish, right?
Can't be that difficult).

I'd also like to pick up a portable dish and make a stand for it for those
times you can't "see" a satellite due to the trees.

As I understand it I need to have either Dishnet or DirectTV "install" a
system - seems that today it doesn't matter how many rooms you need it's the
same cost. Then, with the antenna on the roof or the portable antenna for the
Airstream I just take one of my boxes from the house, hook it up in the
Airstream and Voila! I've got "cable" or "satellite" TV in the Airstream.

Is this correct thinking? Am I missing anything here?

Is it even possible to "rent" a satellite TV setup?

An option might be Ace Fogdall RV in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
They had quite a selection of Airstream window glass (other
than Corning) that they uncovered when the moved from
University Avenue to their new store near US 20. You can
find their contact information at the following link:

http://www.acefogdallrv.com/index.html

Florence or Christy in the parts department can probably
fill you in on the availability of the needed window from
their NOS inventory that was uncovered.
