Hello:

I have purchased a 1964 Bambi 2 and am having trouble with water not being
able to come into the unit. The inlet seems to be stopped up--it has a bell
like item in the inlet line about 12" inside the unit under the goucho, this
could be a water reg..Has anyone had an experience like this?

Thanks

David, the bell like thing is a water regulator. My unit is too old to have
one, so have always used one that screws onto the end of the hose. When this
type fails it does not allow water to pass through. So your regulator might
the the culprit.

A simple test of heat treat on 2024 aluminum. Try to make a sharp bend
with a pair of pliers or a vice. 2024-0 may bend. Any of those heat
treated and aged will break in the bend. Aged 2024-0 may break just from
  age.

That might depend on whether its Alclad or not?

I know my chunks of 2024-T6 are a distinct color, and are not Alclad.
And they break when bent in my brake.

Do you know what the bend allowance is the part you are making?

Sounds to me like you are not allowing enough room for the radius.

When I'm making an electronic chassis, I WANT square bends. So I don't
use 2024T-6 for those. I use my old stash of 2024T-6 only for pieces I
want to stay flat. My brake isn't set up for radiused bends.

Hi Scott, there should be a valve to turn on and off under
there somewhere. In mine it is under my rear double bed. I
can look in my service manual to see where it is in yours,
what is the lenght and layout ?

Tom,
I purchased a whole house GE filter unit (same thing as the RV stores sell,
but less expensive). I use the standard filter (ie no charcoal) to filter
out rust, particles, rocks, etc) as my A/S has the Moen Faucet with the
builtin charcoal/microfilter to handle the rest. GE does sell more
expensive cartridges if you want the extra filtering for tastes. I am
always amazed at the stuff the GE filter catches even after only a few days.
The cost of the filter housing and cartridges is small compared to the
aggravation and cost if replacing faucets (typically at a most inopportune
time). The replacement cartridges are only a few buck each and readily
available at Home Depot, Lowes, etc, so I tend to use toss the used one
after each trip. To hold the unit upright, I purchased one of those
fiberglass flowerpots and cut a hole in the end of it to fit the filter.
This creates a stable and attractive base.

Daisy, the trailer is a 73 tradewind (25 ft), rear bath, mid double
bed/gaucho with a front dinette. I was just assuming that by 73 that the
valve would not be a manual one!!! Oh well.

    All,

Well the summer weather has finally arrived (no more rain please) and
I'm starting to tackle some of the outside issues. So today I I hooked the
garden hose to the Caravel for the first time since buying her 18 months ago
and to my shock and surprise, everything held, not as much as a drip
anywhere.

So on to the Bowen G6A water heater. I couldn't get the pilot to light
but could get a flame by turning the knob from pilot to open. That lasted
for just a few minutes and then it flamed out.

Does anyone know of a repair shop near me in the Santa Monica / Los
Angeles area that could look at the Robert Shaw valve?

I can mail it to Duck Tec in Stockton CA and have it repaired for
$150.00 or buy a new one for a bit over $300 after taxes from them. If I
could get it fixed locally, I'd have more pocket change to spend on other
projects.

Is this rocket science (I don't think so)? Can any stove repair shop do
the work? Can I do the repair with a repair kit if available? If so, where
can I get a kit?

As always, thanks to the List for your endless help,

Glyn,

Any chance of cleaning the pilot light orifice? Sounds like the
thermo-coupler is working if you can get the heater lit but not the pilot
light.

Given any thought at all to a tankless water heater? ;)) The whole-house
system I plumbed in and had a certified electrician hook up for me is
wonderful.

    Tom,

I'll check that orifice more closely to see if there's any restriction
there. Maybe the darned thing works after all.

That said, I'm pretty much committed to keeping the system as factory as
I can. The crazy thing about all this is that the Caravel will never move
from the spot she's in right now but I want everything to work. When I go
to the big trailer in the sky, Marilyn will sell someone a nice little '69
Caravel and be able to immediately drive it away on a trip.

I wasn't too clear in my last post describing the cost comparisons. For
me to ship the entire heater to Stockton CA and have the thermostat assembly
repaired will cost $150.00. A new Bowen G6A7 water heater that the chap
says will look identical to the one I now have will cost me $287.98 plus tax
with the shipping included. And I'm told that the new ones are identical in
appearance but for a white door, even the same size as my stainless ones and
easy to swap.

I'll tell you one thing though, when our 50 gallon domestic heater
finally bites the bullet in the basement, I'm sure as heck going to get a
tankless demand heater like you have.

did you say the flame was the pilot or the burner? If the pilot will only stay

The filter I was thinking of putting in-line after faucet and before the
trailer is one like I have for our whole house filter; looks like yarn wound
around a spool. Those types don't cost but a few dollars for the filters
and they do trap rust, sediment, etc. up to certain sizes measured in
microns which is pretty darn small.

They don't weigh much either so your mileage shouldn't suffer, Daisy. ;)
Are you familiar with those types of filters?

Glyn,

I'm glad for you that your home water heater is in the basement. ;) That's
a good place for it as water seeks it's own level so why not start out on
the lowest point of the house. ;)

The doors on ANY new water heater for the Airstream will *not* be made of
stainless, so don't you *dare* let go of that stainless door - 'ya hear me
there, Glyn? ;) Don't let it go anywhere, make the stainless door "fit" any
and all new water heaters in your Airstream's future. Those tinny doors
they come with today make me ill!

Now, please let me save Marilyn the trouble during her time of future grief
(she WILL be grieving I'm sure!) and let me come out and pick up that mighty
fine specimen of Airstream history just sittin' around on your driveway,
yet. ;) All right with you if I start to pull up some maps needed to find
this little gem? I sure wouldn't want to put your wife in the position of
making any tough decisions when that time comes.

From one Airstream vintage to another, please do me the favor of being able
to help you in Marilyn's future time of need ... today. 'K?

Tom

Subject: [VAL] Homecoming Rally in Jackson Center Ohio 2005

I wonder if there is some way we could begin a list of members who will be in
attendance for the Homecoming Rally 2005. It would be nice to be able to have
a list of names to meet and greet when we get together in Ohio.

We will be coming out from North Carolina where we live just NE of Charlotte.
I haven't done any Mapquest or any other search yet to see just how far it is
and how much driving time I need to plan for to get up there as of yet.

Anyone know of any place we could keep a list and add our names if we are
planning on being there?

I know from talking with Jini (sp?) at the factory that there should now be
over 150 plus names - there was about 130 names when I registered via the
Internet for our reservation.

Jini also told me that there will be electricity there - all of 3 amps. ;)
Guess that's enough to power up the roof-top fans and a lightbulb or two? ;)

Knowing that Ohio is the "Home of Humidity" we are going to be sure to have
the Honda EU3000is generator and plan to be very comfortable. With two 40#
tanks of LP we should be all set.

Does anyone know the arrangement for gray water tanks? Do we have to keep it
trapped or will there be a way to get it picked up?

I did see in a note that Airstream sent me with our confirmation that you
could invite a friend to join in. Do you think they meant only if they have
an Airstream *or* that other SOB's and B-class RV's would also be okay?

I know, so many questions, so little time!

Please come look us up and we will try to do the same. Sure would be easy if
we could get a list together.

Hello Scott
I use a screw in shut off that is plastic. Its green, found in the
garden shop with a shut off, I helps keep the pressure and the pump off.
This is sort of an in-line shut off for a garden hose.
Nothing fancy,

I have a 1973 Tradewind with the city water inlet by the rear bumper.
When a water hose is not connected and I try to use the pump to
pressurize the water system water sprays out the city water inlet. Did
Airstream use a one-way valve at the inlet, or did they rely on the cap
to seal the inlet. If the cap, does anyone know where to get one?

Thanks,

Scott

Scott, I have the same setup; it may be that your one-way (check) valve,

assuning you have it, has stuck open. I experienced this problem after
blowing out my system with compressed air through the street connection
one year. From that time on it has been non-functional; possibly
because I may have used too much air pressure. In any case, until I get

around to replacing the valve, I am using a simple plug in the hose
connection, which I think I got from a hardware store or Fleet Farm, to
plug the hole in the system. The plug should be easy to find, or you
could fabricate a cheap one from a garden hose fitting and a rubber
stopper. Good luck.

Made my reservations for the 2005 Homecoming several weeks
ago, and plant to attend with my Minuet and Cadillac
combination. If my notes are correct, the mileage from
Lansing to Jackson Center if about 225 miles. I am
considering attending the Region 4 WBCCI Rally while in Ohio
as well.
