Hello list:

I am wondering if anyone has a resource for installation instructions or
how-to websites or books on how to install black, gray and water tanks. I am
really good at plumbing, but I have no idea how you go about making the pipe
connections to these types of tanks. Any an all help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Just guessing here...I have a 1972 Globetrotter with no gray-water tank. The
gray-water line is attached to the discharge line below the black water valve
so that it doesn't go into the black-water tank, it simply drains onto the
landscape below. I believe one could disconnect this line from the discharge
piping assembly and install the gray-water tank between the last fixture drain
and the existing gray-water outlet and then reconnect the outflow of the
gray-water tank back to the original gray-water line outlet. Hope this makes
sense... and of course all piping must be slopped to assure gravity drain so
it may be a challenge to make this happen. Let me know how difficult it is...I
may benefit from your lessons learned when I decide to do my own.

Thanks for the info. But I am looking to start from scratch. I need to buy
and install tanks in a trailer that has none now. I am not certain how the
pipe connections are made to the tanks. What in kind of fitting to purchase,
do they glue on, bolt on, use a special application process, how do monitors
install and work, etc? That is what I am looking for. Once I have the tank
installed and the connectors attached to the tanks I am fine. Its that first
step I have never done before and I have not been able to see any existing
applications.

Thanks

Kurt,
Sorry, there are owner's manuals available for download on the Airstream
site. You might try to find one to suit your needs. They do a fine job of
showing the systems inside the trailer.

Most of those questions will be determined by what tank(s) you buy for your
application. I know of at least one Airstream dealer who sells exact
replacement tanks, and believe they are made of ABS plastic. The types of
fittings you will need will also be largely determined by the tank you buy.

Do you plan to buy a replacement tank from Airstream? It would be the
easiest route, but not necessarily the least expensive.

Also, if you add a gray water tank, there is another world of worries about
deadweight on the axles, and weight distribution. I am not aware of a book
like you are hoping to find. Your best bet is probably to get a service
manual from Helen Davis Secretarial Services, and study how Airstream did
it.

Good luck,

I am still working on a fresh water pump. Have been instructed to look
for a Shurflo. No what gpm should I be looking for? I have a 69 18 ft
Caravel. Have bath/shower and kitchen. They list from 1 gpm to 5.7 gpm.
Is noise a problem? What about the Whisper King at 2 gpm?

Hi Dan:

I bought a SHURflo pump a while ago for a separate water system I carry in
the back of my truck. I initially took the pump from inside the trailer
(also a SHURflo) and played around with that for a while. It was a little
over 2 gpm as I recall. Besides supplying water to the trailer while
boondocking, I also wanted to be able to wash down the trailer at the
storage place, where there is no water. Also to fill the water system
before going out (water heater & plumbing).

So I ended up buying a SHURflo washdown pump that is intended to be used for
spraying off boats. It is 3.5 gpm. I put the original pump back in the
trailer. The tank and pump work fine but I don't use them anymore. I have
a 26 gallon flexible bladder tank mounted to a plywood frame that keeps it
from rolling around. The pump is called a Blaster and is very durable and
sealed for outdoor use. It develops enough head to provide a pretty good
spray at the top of the trailer. I plug it into either the cigarette
lighter or the aux 12 port on my pickup.

When using it for trailer water, I just run a hose from the pump to the
normal water inlet at the rear of the trailer. The beauty of this system is
that when the 26 gallons runs out (~2 showers +) I can go get some more
without moving the trailer.

When home, I hang the tank and frame on the garage wall. Works good for me.
Was about $100 for the pump at West Marine. Is pretty quiet, just a little
b-r-r-r-r-t every time it pressures up (to 45 psi).

If you want to see this arrangement looks like, lemme know and I'll email
you a pic or two.
