That should have said it's a 22 kw input coming in from the 100 AMP double

___________________________________________________________________

 Hello Everyone,

I am sorry for the long absence, but I have been traveling for business and
for pleasure and have just returned in the past few days.

I wanted to let everyone know that the website should be up and running in the
next week or so. I had everything inventoried and all of the Part # and SN #
Recorded to make the process of selling and shipping easier. The web developer
has informed that they will have all of the parts added into the database and
the online store ready for test by end-of-week.

I also want everyone to know that all of the Vintage Trailers have been sold.
A private party bought all of them lock, stock and barrel. All except two
which that I am planning on donating to the Museum of Science and Industry in
Chicago and to Smithsonian for the Americana Display. Both Museums have
accepted the trailers as donations and will build displays centered around
these travel travelers and their period of time in American History.

I will let everyone know when the site is up and running.

Jim,

Did you have to do anything special to your trailer... raise the
suspension, or make any other changes to the tailer to handle the roads
down there?

How are the roads?

My first step was to pull up the carpet the previous owner had laid on top of
the plywood floor. I did not know at this time about the floors or the leaky
windows but suspected the carpet had been put down hastily to make the sell! I
was right. Both ends had holes big enough for my chihuahua to get through lol.
I filled them with the insulation that comes in a spray can and exspands. The
other windows that leak had not damaged the floor yet but defnitly on the way!
I had used clear silicone and sealed the ones I thought were leaking in december
then I was gone for two month and after the recent heavy rains I see I have much
more work to do yet.

Leaves

Some time past I had posted about our Classic Motorhome having the engine fail
at the start of our Florida trip this year. My post mentioned a battle with
the insurance company and here are the results. The engine failure was due to
the wrong oil filter being used when I had the oil changed right before the
trip. The owner of the shop admitted fault and turned it over to his insured,
General Casualty. After four weeks of inaction they turned down the claim
stating the failure was due to a "sudden oil pressure surge." My insured,
American Family then took the case and determined in one week that indeed it
was the oil filter. They have since approved a new engine to be installed in
our motorhome. The adjuster stated that almost any manufacture of a 1982
motorhome other than Airstream would have been considered a total loss with a
$16,000 bill. He did his research and found how rare these Turbo Diesels are
and their value. Plus he is only depreciating the old engine 10% for the
50,000 miles it had on it.
Needless to say I am very happy with American Family Insurance. They stood by
when they really did not have to and now we will have our 1982 Classic on the
road again in short order.

That is a happy ending! we dont to hear too many endings like that especially
with a classic rig! Thanks for the name of your ins. Company also. Do you know
or anyone know what companys will insure our classic travel trailers? I am aware
that the towing unit s insurance covers liability while towing but what about
total coverage while its setting still on the trailer itself and contents. Is
theis type of coverage available?

The Digests that had been archived on my site have now been restored to the
site, and may be accessed at:
http://www.tompatterson.com/Digests/Digestlist.html, or from the home page of
http://www.tompatterson.com by clicking on trailers, then on Airstream
Trailers, and then on Vintage Airstream E-mail List Digests.

The Digests that now appear are complete and identical to those that were
earlier displayed, except that the e-mail addresses which are contained in
those digests have now been obscured, so that they are worthless to spammers
who might otherwise use them to harvest e-mail addresses.

As you may recall, the digests were removed several days ago, to preclude them
for being used to harvest e-mail addresses. That proved to be a good move, as
a former disgruntled member did in fact use addresses that he had harvested
while on the list to harass other members. He could only use addresses from
postings that he received while he was a member, and could not harvest further
addresses from the digests. Many of you were therefore spared from his spam.

Some of you have missed messages, possibly from full mailboxes. The archived
digests provide a source of past postings. AOL subscribers tend to miss
messages everytime that the AOL system hiccups. These missed messages are
also available in the digests.

In the past, others have complained about editing which I do on the regular
messages that I display on the website. The digests are totally unedited,
except for the obscuring of e-mail addresses, so that those interested in
viewing the complete original messages now have a source.

Subject: Re: [VAL] Wheels and tires for 1960 Traveler

Cindy,

I think your 1960 Traveler used the same size wheels and tires as our 1960 Pacer
(16 foot). Our original wheels were in good shape but there was no spare, so
I bought an additional wheel and tire for that purpose.

The wheels are industry size 15X6JJ. Dexter makes (or sells) them and my local
Dexter distributor, Rim and Wheel Service, had them in stock. The counter man
at Rim and Wheel said it was a fairly common size, and was used on late 50s GM
pickup trucks. I wouldn't be surprised if your tire shop can get them for you.

Unfortunately, quality assurance in the aftermarket wheel business is not very
good. On the first wheel I bought the rim was welded to the hub cockeyed. (There
was a good inch of side-to-side runout at the tread diameter.) Rim and Wheel
Service exchanged it without any hassle. (They'd seen the problem before.) The
second wheel was a lot better.

In those days Airstreams used 7.00-15 LT light truck tires and that size is
still avalable, although no longer common. My local tire dealer had Firestone
Trans Rib 7.00-15 LT, Load Range D in stock, and that's what I had installed.
Radial tires are probably better, but I have had no problems with the Firestones
in two years now and about 8,000 miles. That tire is rated for 2040 pounds load
at 60 PSI inflation. Our Pacer probably weighs less than 2,500 pounds loaded so
that's darn near a two to one safety factor.

By all means have the tire dealer install the tires on the trailer, as Airstream
wheel wells are _tight_. (Smaller than the Tire and Rim Manufacturer's
Association standards.) For that matter, let them buy the wheels, if they are
willing to. That way they can handle the problem of getting decent wheels! It
took me several trips to the wheel distributor and the tire dealer to get the
job done.

Good luck! Great to see another "little" Airstream on the road!

We just had the wheels and tires replaced on our 1960 Tradewind. It had thesplit rims,
so I just took one of the old wheels to the tire shop, I use a tire service that does
commerical tires as they are about the only ones willing to do split rims. I left the
wheel with them, they matched the wheels, installed the tires, balanced the tire on the
rim and installed them on the trailer for $363.00. That was for 3 rims and 2 tires. I
had a new tire for the spare, as we had a blowout bringing it home. Don't spare expense
when it comes to wheels, tires, brakes or running gear. Blow outs on a single axle are
no fun. Good luck and have fun, Hope to see you on the road.

Now that I have figured out how to obscure the e-mail addresses in the daily
digests, I am prepared to set up a separate search directory for these
digests, so that anyone looking for information in earlier postings will be
able to search the content of these digests. It would be a separate search
from all other information contained on the site, and ought to return much
faster search results.

For anyone who is not aware, there are several search options now available on
my site, which can be accessed by clicking on "Search Site" on the home page
at http://www.tompatterson.com. The databases which contain the information
are presently updated weekly, and are much more comprehensive and up-to-date
than information you will obtain through a search engine such as Google. I am
also considering updating these databases more frequently, perhaps
bi-weekly.

I may also add a separate archive of the old VAC list digests, along with a
separate search directory. I don't have copies of many of these old digests
however, and would appreciate receiving copies from those of you who may have
saved them. Addresses in these digests would also be obscured before posting
them on the site.

Let me know if there is interest in having this information available on the
website.

There are seveal insurance companies that offer "stated
value" or "agreed value" insurance policies for our Vintage
travel trailers. I have had a history with both American
Family (1994-2000 while I was a Wisconsin resident and for a
brief period after relocating to the Quad Cities in
Illinois) and Foremost (from 2000 to the present). In both
instances, my local agent was able to handle the transaction
- - - American Family sent in their own appraiser, and
Foremost asked that I provide an appraisal (my insurance
agent provided a list of acceptable appraisal sources).

There was really only one reason that I left American Family
- - - they evidently aggregate claims and after the third
claim in a three year period (one for wind storm damage on
house and one of my cars, one for an accident with my
Suburban, and one for minor accident damage on my Airstream)
they placed all of my insurance into a high-risk pool where
the premium was four times what I had been paying (needless
to say I immediately changed carriers).

I have been with Foremost for over five years now, and have
been favorably impressed with their operation. I can't
offer any opinioon as to claim handling as I have been claim
free on my travel trailer insurance and auto policies for
more than five years.

Probably the best place to start looking for insurance is
with the current carrier for your automobile coverage if you
have been satisfied with their coverage and responsiveness
to your needs. Ask your agent for details about "agreed
value" or "stated value" coverage for your Airstream -- the
answer to that question will be a first indicator of whether
you will need to expand your search.

Good luck with your investigation!

The highways in Mexico for the most part are good in Belize The places that
one wount to pull the trailers are at the worse about like secondary roads in
the US. Haven said that I would not reccommend any thing longer than 30 ft on
my many trips there and staying at my friends place where parking is avalable I
have sseen a number of differnt rigs which have travled over most of Central
America and none have had any thing special done to them.

Jim,
Did you say you are going next October? I would love to go, I keep hearing
how wonderful Belize is and would rather go with some other people.

P.S. I took my trailer to a local RV repair shop to have some wiring work
done
two weeks ago and on the way home in a dip in an intersection it popped off
the
hitch and rear ended my truck, smashing in the front end of the trailer. I
am heart
broken but the RV shop owner has taken responsibility for not hooking up the
trailer
properly and says he will pay. I just hope he's not all talk and I hope the
trailer
is not totaled because it would be very hard to replace that certain model.
Wish
me luck guys!

to try to sell me a new truck rather than repair my unit. The trans was out

Pam - are you going to replace the entire floor? It can be done without
removing the shell - it worked for me but I'm not sure if all of the
various models would lend themselves to it. One thing that does is
allow you to inspect the frame for rust and to reinforce it if you
decide to add holding tanks - if you don't have them.

Any suggestions on where I might find a replacement rocker switch? It is
the beige flush mount switch that is over the lamps over the twin beds.

I have found several that might work, but they are all black. I would
prefer either the original beige or white.

Any pointers or suggestions would be appreciated.

You can find them at Mouser Electronics www.mouser.com. Do a catalog search on
switches. I believe the switch is the mini switch size, and can be had in either
black or white. You will need the dimensions of the hole that the switch mounts
in to find the right one.

Bill,

Hooked up the new tankless water heater today, have it running at less than
50% of "full speed" and the temp upstairs is almost 120 degrees F.
Downstairs the dishwasher machine will do a fine job at that temp. The
whole house hot water is now almost 120 degrees F.

I'm SO GLAD ! that I took that old water heater out -- it was STILL full of
water, some of it was rusty and I just emptied it the other day but it
back-filled out of all the hot water faucets and baths. What did I find
underneath? LOTS more water and stains on the linoleum floor -- this tank
had been leaking for a while BUT I never knew it until the water came out
from underneath where I could see it.

I would advise anyone to do this before you have an unpleasant surprise one
day -- replace your water heater BEFORE it leaks on your floor and is able
to cause untold thousands of dollars worth of damage. That didn't happen to
me -- I was lucky this time!

I really believe that water heaters should be viewed as needing replacement
at the end of their warranted life if not just before. ALL water tanks WILL
eventually leak and THAT is the time that people usually end up replacing
the tank AND any subsequent damage caused by all that water (which is why
you end up replacing it!). I will do this from now on as preventative
maintenance.
