How do you decipher the code to tell how old the tires are, and where
is the code located?

Jim,

Were these Marathons on your Bambi when they blew? I just bought a set
of Marathons for my '61 Bambi. I have read several posts about blowouts,
but I figured the light weight of the Bambi would be okay. Am I being
overly optimistic (read foolish)? I really wasn't sure what else to get.
The Bambi was switched to 14" sometime in its life. Are you putting the
bias ply Towmasters on 13" rims?

Thanks,
Wally

The first 2 digits of the DOT number denote the week, the last 2 digits the
year. In the ninties, it was just three digits, the last digit for the year.
Jim
PS Another thing about the Marathons, if you have 15" tires that don't have
the "s", you can get a free upgrade to the "s" series if your tires have
less than 25% wear. More than 25% wear, they will prorate the upgrade. The
"s" is in a circle somewhere on the tire. I havn't seen them myself or tried
for the upgrade as I have a different size.

My Bambi is a California model and on the street side, its very hard to
get the 13" tire and wheel off . I am checking to see if I can upgrade to
14" tires. In the meantime, the I have found a 13" Towmaster 13" that is
load rated D for 1660 lbs per tire. This is a higher rating than many load
range C 14" tires.
The last tire that blew up had not been on the trailer for three years. I
just used it for a spare. I don't believe that its failure had anything to
do with the weight of the Bambi. Most of the failures that I've heard about
were with 15" tires on tandem axle trailers. The 14" upgrade would certainly
be preferable if you can get the tire off the trailer if you have a flat. I
don't think that the upgrade is going to protect against blow outs. IMHO

I talked with several tire dealers about TowMaster tires. They all said they
were as good as the Goodyear. They were about 200.00 cheaper than six Goodyear
Tires. I have only about 1100 miles on the new tires but no problems yet.

Hi Bob-
Here's what the invoice says:

CODE: 11-2037
DESCRIPTION: Antenna gear kit Skyliner, Braund
P.O.: 11901
AMOUNT: $7.15

The package says "BRAUND Worm and Worm Gear Kit". I purchased the
"11901 Round Leg" kit. Braund also offers a "13877 Square Leg" kit;
However the parts manager- Ricky- (very knowledgeable and helpful) said
that the round leg kit is the one I need for our 1979 31' Int'l Sov. I
have yet to tear in to this project, as the antenna needs to be removed
from above and we're still on the road.

By the way Bob thanks for the heads up on the WiFi here at San Elijo
State Beach! This has been a great place to hang out for a few days.
Surf's up and the surfers are out in force. Great fun to watch. I'm
trying to work up the nerve to give it a go.. Took the boys out whale
watching yesterday and saw 8 California Greys.
Heading up to Ventura and on to San Luis Obispo via Joshua Tree this
week.

Best

Chris Koehn

Chris,

Oasis RV wrote me back saying that, if you have an invoice with a part
number it would help a lot. Do you have it?

Thanks,

Thanks so much Chris,

Are you still in San Elijo today?
I have to go right by on my way to the VA Hospital for a checkup.

If you were up to it, I could stop by on my return some time this afternoon
and see you and your coach in person. (14:00 - 15:00 hours)

Reply to bob@xxxxxxxxxx.com by 10:00 hours because that's when I have to
take off.

Hope we can connect.

Bob Kiger
PS: If it is OK, let the park rangers know so I can have a visitors pass.

We picked up our '62 Globetrotter Saturday morning during sleet and rain in
Bristol, Virginia, and pulled it home so excited that instead of spending the
night on the road, we drove straight through ! This is not only our 1st
Airstream, but our 1st travel trailer of any kind so we have a HUGE learning curve
and hope that all of you won't mind offering tips and advice ! Right now the
only thing I can think of to ask is: Where can I get the "T" that goes with
GlobeTrotter ?? Ours feel off during transit ! It is gold and appears to have
been glued on the left side of the trailer beyond the door !

Hope to meet ya'll soon at rallies and events ! We are planning on attending
several close to Mississippi during the next couple of months and a cup of
coffee or tea is always waiting for you in "The Dixie Tramper!"

Happy Airstreaming !

Unfortunately the "Globe Trotter" script is not being reproduced that I
know of. I looked for it to replace mine(on a 63 Globe Trotter) that was
pitted. Couldn't find them so I took it off and restored it by powder
coating it. BTW the script is attached by small pegs that go thru the
skin and are held by a clip in the back side of the aluminum skin.

Also consider attending 2 vinatge events near you. The first is near
Pansacola in April and the second is in Mobile in September.
