Hi All,

I am confused about whether we are talking about Silver Streaks or Port
Angeles or a new Conferacy, but for the sake of communion, I offer an
alternative union at the bottom of this message.

I've toured from Canada down to Mexico with a bicycle and later with an RV.
The scenery around Port Townshend and Port Angeles is awesome. Victoria is
one of the most charming cities in the US.

As to the idea of joining Canada and the Northeastern States into a new
Confederacy, down here in Sunny Southern California, I would prefer a total
North American Union, like the European Union, with no borders or
restrictions between Canada, USA and Mexico. Then all the snow birds could
buy a piece of beachfront in Baja and Mexican laborers could work legally.
We could apply total "Homeland Security" to all North America and save all
the money wasted on border security, which doesn't work anyway.

We would promote inter-cultural exchange. I am already learning Spanish . .
. why not French.
Bottom line would be that the Arctic provides an adequate Northern border
and is fully secure and the south of Mexico would be a lot more manageble a
border than is California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Think about it
and spread it amongst yourselves. I am not alone in this thinking.

It is not a provacative joke. It is a real idea, whose time has come.
Resource, labor, energy, commerce, geographic variety unparalled anywhere in
the world, if we put it together.

Sincerely,

Bob Kiger

Looks like the response to Ben Harper's Message Board posting on my site has
been overwhelming. Below is a copy of his latest posting in which he explains
how he intends to proceed.

I will forward all additional information that I receive on to this list as
soon as I receive such information.

___________________________________________

 Hello Again,

First, I would like to personally thank Tom Patterson for forwarding my
posting to so many different vintage trailer sites, as well as providing such
a great forum for vintage trailer owners.

I would also like to let everyone know that I have been receiving many emails,
at a rate I wasn't quite prepared for, and that I am making every effort to
respond to everyones requests.

In the last 2 days I have received more than 300 emails requesting everything
from manuals to appliances, Linens to the purchase of the trailers.

I appreciate everyones patience while I sort through the emails. As I stated
in an earlier posting, I will be setting up a website with digital photos of
the trailers and a full accounting of the inventory.

I will post and email Tom Patterson when the site is up, seeing that he seems
to be one of the foremost authorities on getting information out to all of the
Vintage Fans.

Sincerely
Ben Harper

Subject: [VAL] Spare Tire Carrier

Thanks to all for the information provided on our '66GT spare tire carrier.
The spare is the same brand and size as the other wheels - 7.00 x 15" bias
trailer tires on what appears to be the original wheels. Our Prowler has
225/70/15 radials that are wider and lower profile. The weight distribution
hitch I have is a new Eaz-Lift unit. I am no expert, but the quick hookups
already on the GT frame matched perfectly to that unit, so I would guess
the Airstream system is close. If I can figure a way around the quick hook
up clearance problem, I think this spare tire frame is a much better
alternative to doing any underbody modifications. Reading all of your posts
in the past also indicates a rear carrier is not a good idea because of the
added weight in the back which apparently can cause some frame issues.

If any of you would like to see a photo of this frame, e-mail me off list
and I will send you a couple of shots. As far as I can tell, the only
modification necessary was moving the LP bottles forward.

Hi again Mark:

Are you sure the bottles were moved? As you know, I have the same
arrangement and mine weren't. If the bottles were moved, there wouldn't be
enough clearance to rotate the jack handle (unless you have 20# unstead of
30# bottles. Would be a knuckle buster with the 30s)

Interestingly, the '68 Safaris I've seen have the underbody spare mounting
arrangement. In this design, the bottles are actually moved aft. The
A-frame configuration is also widened, which allows the bottles to be
supported down between the A-frame members, rather than on top like you and
I have.

Check it out.

I think they have been outlawed. Years ago there was a lot of talk and
stories about split rims, killing and maiming people working on remounting these
tires. To but it bluntly they are dangerous. You may find it difficult, to
find folks out on the road who will work with them. I worked in a service
station in the early sixties, my manager would not allow us to work with them. Many
things change along the way, it is time to move on to a better wheel and
avoid problems. Fix it now so it will not be a headache later.

Hello All,
I am reluctantly parting out my '57 Overlander. It is off the frame, so the
entire frame or frame crossmembers are available, as well as all of the body
panels and windows. You can drop me an email with parts requests as well as
watch Ebay. I'll be listing a lot of parts there.

I need a little help.

I have had several offers from restoration shops and private parties to buy
all of the inventory, not the trailers, just the inventory.

Though I am very tempted to do so, I have a concern now about doing so after
receiving so many emails from vintage owners and their needs for parts. I now
realize that it is the inventory that is the treasure that everyone has been
seeking and selling it to a single source may not be the best for the
collective owners of vintage Silver Streak Trailers.

My major concern would be the the inventory would be jacked up to a very high
and unfair price. Even though I know that the value of anything is the cost
that the market will bear, I believe that my Grandfather would be very
disappointed with the aspect of only a select few being able to obtain parts
to restore and enjoy their trailers.

So here is my question to all of you Vintage Fans. How would you like to see
this inventory sold / distributed?

After 3 days of emails, I now know that I want to take a very fair approach to
the sale of the inventory.

Please feel free to email your suggestions to me. I will sort through them
over the next several days and then post the process I feel most fair.

Thanks

Ben, As a collector I would vote to put everything up for auction at one
location and let everyone come and bid...You could break the materials down
into the size units you wish to distribute...You would get a good return and
more than one person can Purchase the good stuff...Please allow the little
collectors like myself to bid on the trailers. Thanks Dallas Blair

Ben -- as you have discovered, you have inherited an amazing resource, a once in a
lifetime opportunity for a lot of people to get original items for these great
trailers, not to mention the trailers themselves. Letting vintage owners have an
opportunity to buy pieces of the collection directly from you would be most
appreciated, although no doubt quite a lot more work for you than just selling the
whole lot to one purchaser and having them come and cart it off. If you can
survive it though, you will have made so many friends all over the country, and
even beyond, and if you want it to be, your life can be forever enriched by this
thoughtful effort. And why not keep a trailer or two for yourself, you might find
you enjoy the world of vintage trailer folk!

I hope you can find a way to sell directly, maybe you can get some help from
willing friends/family or even hire some high school kids to help with the
packaging and sending of purchased items? Or maybe if you say where you are
located, some nearby VAC and/or SS club might help you out with some volunteer
labor? If you have multiple duplicates of so many things (upwards of 25 each I
think you said), once you sort through the emails you might find you have enough
for all the takers of at least some of the items; you could meet those requests
and then decide whether to auction off the rest or at that point to sell the
remainder to a dealer or dealers. I'm sure people on the various lists you have
discovered could give you feedback about which ones are fair and helpful in their
business practices.

Good luck with your decision, and good for you in trying to honor what your
grandfather would have wanted you to do with his legacy.
