Subject: [VAL] Spare tire carrier / Crunched Bambi
Hi All:
Our '66GT has a very nicely fabricated tire carrier behind the LP bottles
which works great with one exception. When the spare is in place, I cannot
access the hardware for the weight distribution system. I have to remove
the spare to have clearance to use the pipe to tension the leveling chains.
It would seem that any configuration of that sort would have the same
problem. Other than that, the frame actually looks like a factory installed
item. Probably something previous owner bought and had welded on.
As far as the crunched Bambi, believe it or not, some jackleg will get this
thing, throw it together and probably stick some unsuspecting person with
it for what seems to be a ridiculously low price. Whoever ultimately buys
this as an end user it will enjoy the unpleasant consequences of trying to
get something for nothing. I've had a dealers license in NC for almost 20
years. You wouldn't believe the prices some people pay for salvage cars
that are wrecked far worse than this trailer. When the big hurricane floods
occurred several years ago in NC, thousands of flood vehicles showed up on
the market with clean titles. NC responded with a damage & flood disclosure
form that has to be completed on anything that is titled, which includes
trailers, but many states do not title trailers. This Bambi could very well
end up with a clean title. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware!

I have a 29 foot Ambas, with the BAC stabilizers. I was wondering if it is a
good practice or even needed to add extra stabilizers at the corners. I found
a set of 4 screw jacks made for AS. for only 32 bucks.
I figured this is the best place to ask a question like this given the VAST
Knowledge everyone here has.
Thanks!

Not really. The original BAL stabilizers do the job nicely as
stabilizers. You do not need a device strong enough to lift a corner. It
will twist the frame causing all sorts of fit problems.

Here is another one you might consider as well. Just $49.95 a year for
50% off. It's http://www.camphalfprice.com/ aka the Happy Camper Club.

Don and others,
I believe every issue of the VA has your dues paid through date on the
mailing lable. There have been many articles over the years explaining this.
There was a full page article in this last issue boldly explaining that dues
are due. We also send out email reminders to everyone we have a good email
address for. We try not to resort to a seperate dues notice mailing or a
seperate insert in the VA because it costs time and money. Believe it or
not, money is short in this club. At this point between non-renewing members
and subscribers I am getting ready for a first...mailing out dues notice
post cards. We have about 400 of them set to go out later this week. Not
only is this costly in $$ but in my time as well.

Scott, thanks for letting me know that my VAC membership had lapsed because
I missed paying my dues. I am sending a new application and dues off today.
I don't remember getting a renewal notice. Is a notice provided. Thanks

Hey Mark:
I carry my spare behind the gas bottles and don't have any problem pulling
up the chains. But then, I don't have anything "fabricated".
If you would like to discuss this, contact me off line. we can kick it
around and maybe exchange a picture or two.

My new application and dues are in the mail. Maybe instead of sending out
mass renewal notices, just send out a notice to anyone whose dues were not
paid by the deadline as a reminder that their membership will ending if a
payment is not made, say in 2 weeks. Just a thought.
Keep up the great job. I will try and be more astute on paying my dues.

I wonder what kind of hitch setup he has installed? With the Equal-i-zer
hitch there are no chains to worry about. Maybe he should look into a more
easy to use hitch?

To everyone on the list wanting or needing Corning replacement windows:
I am happy and excited to announce that Steve Hingtgen, owner of Airstream
Dreams, is now offering replacement glass for Corning windows. Rob Davis
and I turned over our information to him many months ago and we are
delighted that he has accepted the project. After extensive negotiations
with the glass company that will do the manufacturing Steve is now ready to
take orders. I myself just finished placing my own pre-order for a large
window! The prices are very reasonable, but the shipping cost is far below
what Rob and I calculated we could do it for. This is one reason we turned
the project over to someone already in the business of supplying vintage
replacement parts. Steve's business is a well run and smooth operation! AND,
as if this isn't enough, the first ten orders placed for each size of glass
gets a discount! Go to http://www.airstreamdreams.com/ for more information.
This is not something that either Rob or I benefit from financially, and
this posting is provided solely as service to those who have longed to have
glass instead of plastic for their '66 - '68 Airstreams.
Best regards to all,
Forrest McClure
