To be a member of the VAC you must also be a member of WBCCI. This is
because the VAC is a intra-club (or sub-club) within WBCCI. The VAC been an
intra-club of WBCCI since its inception. I know that this is not popular
with some, but this is how it is.

To non-WBCCI members the VAC offers a subscription to its newsletter. This
subscription does not give the right to attend any functions.

However, WBCCI rules allow for recruiting of non members by inviting them to
what is called a buddy rally. A non-member may only attend only one buddy
rally a year.

So, IF the Grant's Pass rally is a Buddy Rally, Jo Ann and anyone else who
is not a WBCCI member may attend. Even if you own a SOB instead of an
Airstream. But please keep in mind that the purpose for this is the
recruiting of new WBCCI members.

    All,

I have bits and pieces of what I believe to be a Humphrey light but need
to get the ceramic nose piece, mantel, gas knob and globe to complete it.

Notice that I said that I believe it to be a Humphrey because the name
does not appear on mine anywhere (the decorative black striped center piece
is missing on mine.) That said, mine looks just like the one being offered
on eBay, number 4523918820.

I clicked on the lower left image and I think it says Humphrey amidst
the black stripes, am I correct? If so, does anyone know the model number
for that one (and presumably mine?) Without that model number, I can't
intelligently order the correct parts on the phone from the Gas Products
Company in Georgia.

    Thanks,

Hi Glyn:

I too have a Humphrey lamp like the one on Ebay, but mine has no
numbers on it that I can find with a magnifying glass. The only words
besides the name "Humphrey" at the front center bottom is found lightly
etched into the glass globe: "PYREX made in U.S.A. for Humphrey".

The lamp is just not helping us. They probably put the part
and/or model number on the box the lamp originally came in.

Healthy Homes has for sale the type of spare tire rack that fits under
the front trailer body; supposedly fits the '60s vintage trailers. I
have a 1966 Sovereign and am looking for a better way to carry my spare
than sticking it on the hitch A-frame behind the LP bottles. Does
anyone have experience with the under-body carrier? Is there special
mounting hardware, etc? Any and all input is welcome. Thanks!

Tom, thanks for the link; that gives me a really good idea of how it works.

It looks like the belly pan is simply cut away under the front, to
create a recess for the tire. Has anyone done that? It seems to me that
the furnace ductwork runs into that area under the floor; would that
interfere?

Have you ever gave any thought of mounting the trailer spare tire just
below your trucks spare tire ? You should have plenty of clearance.
Use good chains to tie it uptight to your truck tire and you will have
it with you all the time.

My 76 A/S has the factory installed spare tire carrier under the front
trailer body. My service manual has a page with detailed drawing if that
would be of help. Send me an address or fax number and I will copy and send
it to you if you like.

Hi John:

Just curious, but what is wrong with carrying the tire behind the bottles?

I carry mine there, restrained by a nifty (if I do say so myself) hidden
chain system. I also cover it with a black tire cover. To keep it against
the bottles instead of the sheetmetal of the front of the trailer, I have a
pair of bungee cords that originate behind the tire (the chains) and appear
at the outside top of each bottle.

Works great for me and has for a number of years now. If you want to know
more detail or see some pictures, let me know.

If not, good luck with the underbody one.

I think the idea of a buddy rally is that a WBCCI member invites someone to

Hi Gary, the only minor problem has been slight scuffing of the front of
the trailer, which I could deal with by doing as you say, pulling the
tire snug up to the LP bottles with a strap of some sort. But the real
reason I guess is that I am thinking about building a battery carrier to
fit in that space on the A frame, to accomodate a 2 battery set up and
to a) get the battery gases outside of the trailer, and b) move the
additional weight (adding the second battery) to the front of the
trailer. As part of the plan, the heavy univolt is also going to go
(have already purchased the Inteliverter w/ Charge Wizard).

With the 30' Sovereign, I haven't seen any sign of frame flexing/droop,
but it has been my longer-term goal to get weight off the rear (of the
trailer, that is)!!!

So moving the spare tire is not so much because it's in a bad spot, as
that it is "facing competition" for the real estate it occupies.

Thanks--
John

I think it can bring a profit if one parts it out and
sells it off in fragments. Parts, tanks, appliances,
etc. etc. all add up quickly. I know first hand,as I
am buying items left and right for my 1963 Overlander
project. It's $ 1500.00 just for all the bathroom
related items.
Still, it will be interesting to see for how much this
will end up selling.

If you can find a WBCCI member who is going, and have them take you along as
a "buddy", then go. Otherwise, your only option is to join the WBCCI (and
then the VAC) and get in all the fun.

Call your local group ( you can probably get a contact number from the WBCCI
website) and ask about it. Tell them that you are interested, but want to
experience a rally before making a decision. You may just get an invitation
at that time.

Dear Joann,
just join this motley clan already. I was invited to
the VAC Rally at Colorado Springs in 2004 by Shari and
Rob Davis, and went ahead and joined right
afterwards. Much to the surprise of my wife, btw., who
did not figure me to be joining ANY clubs.
We both had a wonderful time at Colorado Springs.
They are organized by regions, and then units. So, if
you live in California, for example, then you would
belong to region 12, I believe, and then find a
suitable unit near your home for the weekend stuff. I
joined South Coast California Unit. Haven't done a
single thing with them yet, but will definitely check
it out this year.
Then, quickly join the VAC, which is why I joined the
wbcci in teh first place. It's not a large monetary
loss if you find out that you don't like it
afterwards. Just don't renew if you don't like it any
more.
My unit has a lot of weekend trips, I suppose
everybody still works 'til they turn 90 around here to
afford the lifestyle.....
I am not much of a club or Rally person, but the VAC
is too cool to not belong.
Having said that....where's the next California Rally,
anyways?

I have some thoughts about joining the WBCCI, or not, to get
off my chest.

First of all, it does not cost more than a few bottles of
antifreeze or a few tubes of Vulkem. We are not messing
around in boats, I mean Airstreams, because we are intending
to save money. Especially if you join a unit like the
Washington DC group where dues are $1 a year. None of us
want to replace our refridgerators, but we will. So why not
join ?

Secondly, refusing to join the WBCCI does not have any
effect on that organization, they don't know you are unhappy
with them, so as a gesture of protest, it falls flat. If you
want to be heard or better yet make changes for the better,
then the first thing you have to do IS to join it and start
to work on it. It's all very well to sort of have a Boston
Tea Party idea that the VAC should form its own group appart
from the WBCCI, but we wouldn't last long. Among other
things, the visibility of the WBCCI is such that without
them, we would have a very hard time keeping our membership
rolls up.

"What do I get for my money" you ask ?

Principally you get an organization that is an umbrella and
clearing house for anything and everything to do with
Airstreams. The most visible and fun parts of this are the
rallies and caravans. You also get courtesy parking, the
Blue Beret ( for whatever it's worth), and the VAC gets the
support and protection of the organization from an insurance
and liability point of view. The VAC CANNOT afford this, and
I for one would not be an officer without that protection.

Those of you who have met me know I have no patience with
stuffy tiresome people and no fear of doing what I want to
when I want to. Maybe 16 years of teaching High School
Industrial Arts has made me fearless. At any rate, one of
the most hilarious moments of last years International was
moi, dressed in Tom Howarth's beret, shirt and tie, carrying
the flag at the opening ceremonies. There is even a picture
of me to prove it in the VA. So if an old hippie like me can
deal with the pomp and circumstance and the fussy rules, you
can too. There are boring people and boring events everywhere.

Everyone should go to at least one International. Watching
an instant city spring up overnight in the middle of a field
will help you understand what an undertaking this is and why
there are so many rules and regulations. This is not to
excuse those unfortunate instances where someone has no
manners, not enough useful to do, and gets a bang out of
being the Rules Police. Instead, remember the hundreds of
people who work all year to put it on.

If you enjoy this list, enjoy the VA, then you should become
a full member.

If you have never been to a rally, you are missing a great
thing. You like to email about vintage trailers? Wait until
you get to talk to a big bunch of people who are happy to
talk trailers 24/7 AND let you, nay beg you, to see theirs.

Write that check and get over here !

The FL state Rally at Sarasota is nearly here ! One of the
best. I'll be there ! Write a check and hurry on down.

Daisy,

Allright, if Joann wants to come she can use my number as her buddy,
even though she is at SLO and not Pomona. I would hate for someone to
miss a vintage rally for lack of a buddy.

Hi Daisy:
Thanks but I'm OK. Maybe I'll just go, park across the street and
sort of twirl my barefoot toe in the dust until some kind person comes
along! I think I was invited anyway a few days ago.

After printing and reading Daisy's email, I have this to say: Why
expect the benefits of a club if you don't join, I belong to the Lincoln
and Continental Owners Club, I would not think of attending one of their
events and expect to be welcomed if I was not a member, why should
someone expect to attend an Airstream Club rally if they were not a
member? When we purchased our Safari in August, 2002, we joined the
WBCCI but did not know what to do about joining a unit so we joined as
members at large (cost $15 extra, in lieu of unit dues). We are in
Southern California, it was easy to determine that we are in Region 12
(California and Nevada) but there are 14 units in Region 12, I knew that
Monterey Bay, Nevada, Northern California, San Joaquin, Santa Clara and
Sierra Nevada were not close but what about Golden West, Long Beach, San
Bernardino (now El Camino Real), San Diego, San Fernando, South Coast,
Southern California and Tri County units. I could not find out where
these units were located or why I should join one as opposed to
another. We attended the Vintage Rally in Santa Maria and decided to
transfer from Member at Large to the San Bernardino (now El Camino Real)
unit. We have attended several unit rallies and felt welcome at all of
them. We will attend the South Coast Unit rally the beginning of March
because it is close and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (still working
and can't use all my vacation on rallies). I investigated this unit
because of a conversation with Uwe and he said he belonged, now I know
where the South Coast unit is. We will continue to belong to the El
Camino Real unit and attend their rallies. We plan; on attending the
Northern California Sacramento Jazz Rally, which we first heard about at
the Santa Maria Vintage Rally, and then go to the Grants Pass Rally,
which we first heard about at the Death Valley Rally sponsored by the El
Camino Real Unit over Veterans Day weekend.

It is always more enjoyable to be somewhere with friends rather than
being alone. One real advantage to attending a rally is that someone
else has planned the location and what to do, all you have to do is show up.

As much as I hate Mission Statements, I believe that somewhere in the
WBCCI information and on the website there should be an explanation of
what the units are for and each unit should have a short explanation of
what their goals are and where there are located.

By the way, Daisy, are you coming to Salem, OR in 2006?

To all that helped me identify my found '54 liner, Thank You. My wifes dad
passed last week and we have inherited (sp) his house in Jamestown, NY.
Because the liner is unable to make that long a trip yet I'm afraid she'll
have to be scrapped. To avoid a "two home expense" we'll be leaving Arcadia,
Fl no later than the first week in April, if not sooner. Good luck to you
all. The passoin you show for these silver road warriors is astounding.
I'll stay on list untill I have to shut down internet service. Bill

Joann,

If you go and park across the street, it won't be long before someone
will see your trailer and you will be invited to come across and at
least join Happy Hour, why not attend as a member and participate in all
of the events?

Daisy,

What are you going to do now? The 54 liner is too far away for me.

Bill, sorry to hear about your father in law, but when you get internet
back in NY come back, you don't need an Airstream to belong.
