My future trailer projects will all receive hydraulic
disc brakes for this very reason. The discs are
naturally much better balanced, present less unsprung
weight, and deliver real world stopping power with
superb self-cooling. I just put in an order for a set
of disc brake axles for my 1963 Overlander.
I look forward to eliminating the imbalance and
clumsiness of the conventional electric brakes, and
the associated problems over time.

I will be looking forward to learning of your experiences with this
installation. My plans include the same project for my '64 Overlander
in 2006.

Good luck with the axle/disc brake installation!

Subject: [VAL] Another Bike Rack Solution

I went through the same process of wanting to put a rack on the back of my
trailer and it was members of this list that convinced me that it wasn't
such a good idea.

My solution was to take an old Thule roof type rack and convert it (easily)
to mount into the front stake holes of my truck bed. It's the type of rack
that holds the bike by the front fork. My set up holds three adult bikes.
The bikes take up a lot of room in the bed, but you can stuff a lot of stuff
around the bikes. I also carry a large utilility box (2'x2'x4 1/2') in the
aft end of the bed (short bed) and there is still enough room for the bikes.

This system works great for me. It's easy to put the bikes in and out. And
what's really important to us is that the bikes are always with the truck.
Even though a lot of biking is done in and from the campground, there are
many times when we take the bikes to somewhere else to use them. Another
benefit is when we are not camping the rack is always on the truck, so
loading the bikes for a trip to the local bike path takes less than 5
minutes. This is my best ever bike rack solution.

If anyone wants a picture, let me know.

Dear listers-
We're camped at Guadalupe State park east of Boerne, TX tonight (north
of San Antonio). Last night was chilly: our furnace went on the blink.
So job one today was to get it fixed. we first stopped at the Airstream
dealer just east of San Antonio. They were quite disinterested in
working on our 1979, and had almost no parts. They referred us to a
large RV dealer north of San Antonio- Ancira RV. A huge operation, they
also had no parts for our Suburban furnace, and wouldn't even look at
it for 3 weeks. No exceptions for full-timers.
We drove two miles further down the frontage road to Boerne RV- a small
shop right next to Alamo RV park just of Interstate 10. They got us
right in, fixed the furnace in this afternoon, were friendly and
helpful, and reasonably priced. They had another Excella in the shop-
one that had been hit by a train (not pretty..) they are rebuilding. I
wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

A professor friend of mine is going to have his students design an interior
for a 1957 26 foot Airstream shell. He is looking for a couple of things to
help introduce the topic to his students. One is an Airstream production
video from the 70's "that goes on and on forever about the production
process". Aparently back when it sold at the Airstream store it was $10.

Second is a book he thinks is titled "Airstream" with an introduction by
Robert Cummings.

Do any of you know where he might find either of these items for use in his
class in the very near future?

Scott,

Is the video different than the first segment in the Vintage Airstream
Caravan DVD? This segment is entitled "Building Dreams is Our Business"
(1968).

Greetings,
Has anyone tried or thought of putting the old fashioned U-haul type surge
brake
hitch on the trailer tonge to operate the old fashioned hydralic brakes on
the
1950's AS's? I have a '58 26' Overlander that has the original hydralic
(non-operating) brakes and to my knowledge has not been converted to
electric.

Subject: [VAL] Re: surge brakes

I'm not sure about the legality of surge brakes on modern trailers. There have been
controllers that allow backing up and maybe even braking while backing. The
simple surge master cylinders didn't do that. Made for rotten backing with the
trailer brakes locked.

Some modern (and large) farm wagons now come with surge brakes. They have
added shock absorbers on the telescoping tongues to moderate braking when
the tractor speed changes abruptly.

I much prefer electric brakes though I can conceive of electric over hydraulic that
would use the modern electric brake controller to control the hydraulic brakes on
the trailer. The original hydraulic brakes planned on tapping the tow vehicle
hydraulic brake system with the loss of safety posed by breaking that flexible hose
between tow vehicle and trailer. In those days, the tow vehicle brakes were a
simpler system so adding the trailer hydraulic brakes didn't upset any balance.

Scott -
I think I can point you in the right direction on both of these items. The
video piece was on the VAC DVD that was available a few years back. I
believe it is out of production at the moment because of compatibility
issues with all of the different DVD players on the market. The second item
is a book simply entitled 'Airstream' by Robert Landau and James Phillippi
dated 1984. I found mine at Oasis RV in Tucson several years ago.

Email me off list for add'l info.

Brad,

I think that you are correct, the book is available at several used book
sites for $145. It was available at Jackson Center a few years ago. It
was published by Peregrine Smith Books of Salt Lake City, now, I think,
Gibbs Smith, publisher also of Salt Lake City.
