Subject: [VAL] Window Operator Solution

Hello All,
I thought that I would share my success story with the group! I have 4
very worn window operators on my 59 that I had to replace. I whet to a
well known vintage RV part supplier and asked if they had a solution for
my problem and $75 later and shipping I had 4 operators that might not
work or would have taken some real fabrication to get them to work. BTW
these came without the nylon rollers that fit in the track on the window
and did not come with handles. They were also very light compared to the
heavy nature of the windows and the original equipment. After pondering
this situation for about a month I decided to brave the cold and hit the
hardware stores ( my kids will tell you that is not much of a sacrifice
on my part!) to see what I could find.

I found what I needed at both Menards (wrong colors) and Home Depot, I
violated my vow to not shop at this place, and picked up 4 Casement
Window Operators in gray. The arm length and mounting holes are exactly
the same as the OME operator. I did have to move the track on the window
down a little so the window would close. This involve drilling two new
holes and reinstalling the original screws. The best part of this is the
cost, $9.95 each! AND they come with all the pieces! AND no shipping!
They come in right and left handed styles, I needed two of each.

So I have 4 new operators ( the ones I did not use) and the 4 old ones
off the 59 for sale if you need them!

We all had a great time and five days didn't seem like long enough. To much
to see, so many folks to chat with and so many trailers to inspect. If I
know the promoters of this event, it promises to be even better. Get your
registration in early.

We have camped in and around the Lava Beds Nat Monument many times. There
is a campground inside the monument, but I don't recall whether trailers are
allowed. There are many oher places to dry camp in the area, Medicine Lake
campground, for instance. You can camp anywhere in the National Forest that
isn't posted prohibiting it. Organized Forest campgrounds are shown on the
National Forest maps. Contact me off list for more info.

    Hello all.
I know someone before has said they found replacement shocks from an auto
parts store. After 4 stores and three hours with no success in finding any to
match, I called someone else and he said they are only available thru
Airstream dealers.
If someone knows a good P/N that I can use at NAPA or some other place then
please let me know.

Hello All,
As I have completed my installation of the window operators I thought I
would reinstall the screens. The nose and rear windows have screen
holders attached but the side windows do not. There is no evidence
(holes in the frame or inside skin) that would indicate that there were
any type of screen holders originally. So the question is how did the
screen stay in place? Anyone out there with a 59 with a set up like this
that can provide the answer to my newest restoration mystery?

I think it might be best to get them form an Airstream
parts supplier. InlandRV in Corona has them at a fair
price.
The problem is that most shocks are designed to work
in a vertical installation setup. The Airstream shocks
are designed to work horizontal.
you might find a physically correct set of shocks,
that is a waste of money due to the lack of
functionality when mounted horizontally.
Still, though, if you do find out more about this, let
us know....

Some vintage Airstreams use nearly horizontal shocks, some use more vertical
shocks. The near vertical shocks seem to be most easily replaced by the
shortest available shocks with loops on both ends. Those were the standard
shocks for fronts of GM products for a couple decades including 70s vintage
pickups and some performance cars of that same time period also.

NAPA/Gabriel 94005 fits that description.
