I can understand that perfectly. It was their party,
I doubt they wanted all the restrictions the WBCCI
would have held them to. I have to say after going to
four Internationals, five Sarasotas and some other
rallies...the Homecoming was the most fun one I've
ever been to. The only ones that I've been to
that were comparable were the WDCU which isn't your
typical WBCCI rally by any stretch of the imagination.

Subject: [VAL] Airstream marketing and Harley Marketing

I have read some of the posts on Airsteams Marketing thinking
on how Vintage trailers help sell new Airstreams> The expert
on using an established brand to sell new products is Harley
Davidson. I have several motorcycles but no Harleys, When I
have been to any Harley event there is no differance between a
rider on a vintage bike or a brand new bike. Harley takes full
use of this with there marketing and they have had a huge
increase in sales over the last 2 decades. I don't know what
the target demographic or the marketing departments view of
vintage trailers is but following Harleys example would help
Airstream sell more product. I am a newer owner of a 1985 345
MH so I am not quite a vintage member but I see the advantages
to both the old and the new. We need to look at HOG, the
Harley Owners Group
which is a group for all Harley owners as an example of a all
group that benifits the owners and the company.

Now if it was made of Aluminum, that would be something!

It doesn't matter anyways. I don't think it comes in lefty. The door would
be in the wrong place.

Of course this does relate to the previous recent threads with Airstream's
efforts to tease out a younger market demographic and appeal to them.
Airstream would even generate another revenue stream from licenced product.

Of course the company even stands behind the product.

Hi Tim,

There are pictures of Pearl on Tom's web site. The list of improvements
is long. Short answer to your question:

Pearl had been in a campground storage lot for about 28 years. Trailers
built in the early 50's had no 12 volt system or waste water holding
tanks, she had the original 110 only hot water tank and fridge, no
tires, a non-working floor heater, no fresh water tank, the curb side
goucho had been removed along with the fold-out table, the floor was
partially carpeted and the remainder patched, and the toilet flushed to
the ground! (you used to dig a hole in the ground and position the
toilet over it!) BUT, all the windows and skins were in great shape
along with the frame. I brought her home from PA to Long Island in a
blinding rain storm with no working lights, no safety chains, no
trailer brakes, and new tires that were the wrong size. I had to go
straight to a trailer shop because the jack didn't work and the propane
lines were shot with no tanks and a tongue in poor shape. They replaced
the tires, electrical harness, jack and propane lines. One week later I
headed for Colorado for the Rocky Mt. VAC Rally having no idea the
extent of what all needed to be done!

After two weeks on the road my list of repairs was quite extensive! I
had an appointment at the Airstream Plant for one weeks worth of
repairs and stopped in Ohio on the way home. My appointment with the
service manager, Rick March, was one to remember! It ended with him
telling me they couldn't do any of the work and me crying like a baby
saying, if Airstream couldn't fix Pearl, who could? I think the crying
worked cause he softened up and when I offered to leave her at the
plant all winter he said he'd take the list and do whatever they could.
Whew! I left her there with my fingers and toes crossed.

Four months later they had done: all new electrical wiring, all new
plumbing, added two Fantastic Fans, air conditioner, propane fired hot
water heater and fridge, 12 volt system with batteries, fresh water
tank and pump, marine propane fireplace, new floor, replaced toilet and
shower fixtures, patio awning, door step, re-attached the front and
rear shell to the frame (had frame separation) front and rear
stabilizers, and most important a grey/black holding tank!!! The list
of small stuff is endless like making a pantry out of one of the
closets for me. I gotta tell you, the guys at the plant were wonder
workers!!! Rick emailed me weekly with updates and Wayne, the mechanic
doing most of the work called me every Fri. afternoon to tell me what
all had been done that week! I will be forever grateful for the
personal touch they added to Pearl. Without their determination to get
it all done I would never have been able to use Pearl the way I do -
7,800 mile trip last summer!

Hello Gerald Johnson ....Thanks so much for the details about 5th wheel and
trailers ...We are still in the process of gathering info ....and we are still
very much leaning towards the Airstreams almost 99.9% New ones are nice but
somewhat out of our price range...(unless publishers clearing house visited our
home) We like the sleek look of Airstreams, the material used in building
them. We don't think the space is going to effect our decission. I hope when
we find our Airstream we will have a good honest place to have it restored.
We are still searching ....thanks so much for all your input and we enjoyed
your story about your dad ....You were more than father and son you guys were
friends ....how lucky ...happy and Healthy New Year ....I am still recovering
from surgery I had the beginning of Aug. but getting better and stronger

In California, using a fifth wheel trailer and a commercial Class A License
you can tow an additional trailer behind the fifth wheel as long as you don't
exceed an overall length. I think it is 60' overall including tow vehicle.

What I was asking -- because I haven't been to the Homecoming "Party" -- was
there a booth or station or opportunity of some kind at the Homecoming event
for the WBCCI to represent itself and attract potential members? Does anyone
know if the WBCCI was even invited to the "party?" For all I know Airstream
gave the WBCCI an invitation to promote itself, but we didn't follow up on
it. If so, then I'm barking up the wrong tree. I'm not insisting that the
Homecoming event be a sanctioned event, just that the WBCCI and VAC be
invited. That would be the reciprocity I was refering to.

Every Airstream owner was invited...no matter if a VAC or WBCCI member. Yes
both the club and intraclub was represented...very well.

Many WBCCI bigwigs (at least those with the big rigs!) were there early
enough to be parked in the first row.

Those of us from the VAC were mainly parked toward the rear...but that was
because we arrived later. One VAC member parked on the road behind the
factory in a very visable place and had a nearly continuous open house.
There were no tables per say were either group could promote itself...but
frankly I would not of wanted to be stuck behind one!

I found it interesting that while not a WBCCI event, Airstream's
organization and running of the rally was typical WBCCI...just a lack of
formality pomp and circumstance.

Space in a camper is simultaneously a blessing and a curse. Its nice to
have the space but when out traveling having the extra space to
organize and clean and to keep track of the extra stuff that fits there can
take away from the joy of the trip. One needs to avoid the pack rat
syndrome (I say as I work my way around the piles in this house) to make
the traveling more fun. Cleaning (and cooking) should take very few
minutes else the chief cook and bottle washer in the family gets no
vacation, just a transfer of work from home to camper probably with fewer
convenience appliances.

Its worth getting into RVing through low cost entries, not necessarily
Airstream quality.

A vintage Airstream can be a joy, a fun project in progress, or an albatross.
Its more a joy to the handy family that can do the work required, and when
that work isn't extreme. Its more an albatross when the work has to be
hired and is extensive.

I think the ideal vintage Airstream would be one from a family who has
used it regularly over the years, and taken care of its foibles like wiring,
plumbing, appliances, leaks, and floor rot. Though the best bargain initially
is the Airstream that has been parked for 25 years, I believe that's the
characteristic of the albatross where EVERYTHING needs attention from
skin seams to plumbing needing all replaced to wiring shot an floor rotted
from broken windows. There are such vintage Airstreams from families who
have used them regularly and not broken them up. Probably good lists are
on Tam Patterson's or the VAC web pages in classifieds.

One Airstream shop I've heard good words about on this list is Ace
Fogdhall in Cedar Falls Iowa. I've never been there though its closest to
me.

You need to be able to recognize the needed repairs when shopping else
you could be overwhelmed by the work needed and the costs if you can't
work on it yourselves.

My dad built that first folding camper while recovering from a gall bladder
operation. His doctor wouldn't let him go back to work setting type and
carrying nothing heavier than the paper copy, so he built that camper. He
didn't work long at first but it was ready for the road before the doctor let
him go back to work. He restored the Caravel by himself starting when he
was at least 80.

Now all of his affairs are over except for some hammering and scratching.

On my travels in the last three months, I noticed a vintage Airstream for
sale on US 169 in northern Madison County. I didn't stop, and I don't have
the exact address. I think it was something like 14 miles from either the
southern edge of the county or from the county seat. I don't know the logic
of their 911 addressing, but as I recall it had a number like 1497. I don't
regularly take that route so I've not seen it since.

You had an attachment, photo type, that keeps getting removed
because the list software won't pass any attachments fearing they might
be virus as some have been.

I am a St. Louis based filmmaker interested in making a documentary about
Wally Byam, the Airstream company and the travel trailer lifestyle that

airstream collectors' dedication to restoring and preserving these trailers.

I am looking to attend the Springfield, Missouri rally in June 2005 and
interview persons attending about their airstreams, their restoration and the
travel trailer lifestyle. I would like to hear from anyone who is interested in
participating in the project and who will be attending the rally in
Springfield.

I am looking to create a appreciative look back at the Airstream and how it
has been so deeply integrated with american travel, exploration and leisure.
I have created docs that have aired on Discovery, PBS and screened in

Indy,

If my antenna is tuned right, I get that you are somewhere in-between filthy
rich and churchmouse, probably in pretty good shape, but not in a position to
lay out cash on the table for a new Airstream without wincing a bit.

In my rarely humble opinion, I think your best bet would be to remain
ever-vigilant, tenacious and relentless in searching for a vintage 'Stream
which somebody else has already had restored and maintained professionally to
protect his 'investment', then died.

You can probably buy it from the heirs for less than what it's worth (they
just want the money quickly, to settle the whole mess) and a LOT less than it
would cost to hire professionals to do all the work from scratch. It may
sound a bit ghoulish, but it works.

I've seen many a yacht, RV, trailer, house, etc., which have just been
completely overspent on, suddenly get sold in a hurry to satisfy younger
inheritors who want nothing to do with 'dad's obsession'. Cash talks, and
often walks away with really good deals to the first one there, ready to
transact.

And the Airstream will hold it's value, probably go up, while the fiver will
just eventually shake itself to death on the road, NEVER again to be worth
what you pay for it in the first place. As somebody else mentioned: after a
while, the slideouts won't slide out, or worse...they won't slide back in when
you're getting ready to leave in the morning. In the rain.

If you're really sold on the idea of the towability of a fifth wheel (it IS
true), you might consider that which a guy did a while back: he wanted a
genset for his old Airstream, AND he already had the fifth wheel in the back
of his truck. Being a welder/fabricator, he simply extended his frame
forward, to accommodate his Onan 6.5, then added a stout gooseneck and, by
George...an Airstream Fiver was born. As far as I know, it worked like it was
factory made and he ended up with the best of both worlds...and a
one-of-a-kind trailer.

Hope that helped...it did ME anyway!

Thanks Scott,

I hope to visit the factory someday, and maybe even the Homecoming. My first

cynical, but I actually think everything is getting better --
Airstream/WBCCI/VAC relations, product quality, membership, etc. I know our
Denver Unit is growing and improving as is our Rocky Mountain Vintage

Welcome Brent,

Have you visited the Vintage Airstream Club web site? It is at:
www.airstream.net There is lots of resource material there. Also, you might
contact our historian, Fred Coldwell, at agrijeep@xxxxxxxxxx.net . He might be
able to provide you with a DVD of historical Airstream movies. These items
and some other documentaries (available on the VAC web site) might give you
some perspective on what has been done and then what you would like to do.
Many of us will be at the International rally.

Hi Brent:

The VAC has stopped producing and selling the "Old Airstream Caravan
Movies on DVD" DVD set because of compatibility problems with some
user's computers and DVD players. The number of returns made the
project no longer fun or viable. It was a good idea but the technology
was not as universal as we had hoped.

I have not been selling the DVD's for at least the past year. I
think the VAC has run out of the DVDs, but you should contact Linda
Moore to find out for sure. She can be reached at:

Forrest,

I imagine you are a big part of the growth of the Denver unit and the vintage
club rally.... I say that because of things you've written here. I'll be in
Colorado this coming summer, after the International...... from what I've
heard about the rally you all put on I wish I had a vintage unit.

You certainly DON'T need a vintage unit to attend the Co VAC rally. We own
a 2002 rig have attended the last two rallies and already have our name on
the list for the on coming up this Aug. The rally always has a few newer
units and in reality, vintage is a state of mind as much as an age of A/S.
This rally is simply the best.

Hello,
I am looking for a resource for 4 new window operators for my 59. The
ones on it now are worn and slip when opening the window. I picked up
four from a parts supplier ( to remain unnamed) that they claimed would
work but they are way too small and what I can find at other RV dealers
are too small as well. These are what I would call heavy duty in nature.
If any of you out there with a 59 that you replaced the window operators
on found replacements please drop me a line. Also if you are looking for
4 new, but too small for my 59 window operators I have 4 for sale!
Thanks

Hi Forrest,

I met you at the Rocky Mt Rally, and I'm glad you are coming
to MO. It's something everyone should see at least once, an
instant city of trailers ! Be sure you park with the Vintage
Folks, we have the most fun. We will probably be driving
in as a parade together at some point, hope you can make
that, it's a thrill !

For anyone out in that neck of the woods, the Rocky Mt
Vintage Rally is one of the best I've ever been to, don't
pass it by if you can possible get there.

Mary and Indiana

There is another way to look at the choice between fifth wheel and
conventional trailers.

How are you going to use your trailer? Will you move it only as few
times a year? Or will you move it often? Do you like to park in state
and national parks where space is confined? Or do you stick to large
private parks?

My point is this: The technology of fifth wheels has been applied to
large units with multi-slide-outs. Remember that each slide adds
appreciably to weight. Fifth wheels are perforce big units. It takes
more to pull them. It may take more space to park them.

We have full-timed for 10 years. We travel across the country and back
at least once a year. We like to caravan. We like to park in public
facilities at times. We also like to park in our kids' driveways. We
often park at Elks Lodges. Our present unit, our longest yet is a
31-foot Airstream, a 2001 model. Before that we used a 29-footer.
With a Hensley hitch, which we've used for the last 120,000 miles, we
do not experience sway. Often is the time we have pulled into a rest
stop and found a stronger wind than we had sensed. Previously, we used
Reese hitching equipment and believe there is no comparison.

My real point is to suggest that you figure how and where you will use
your trailer and how big a trailer you want to tow. We have met a lot
of folks who went for the biggest, most comfortable fifth-wheel they
could find. Then, they didn't travel all that much because they felt
the trailer oppressive to pull.

We camped for 30 years or more before we retired and started
full-timing. The last family rig was a mini-motor home. To test how we
would like trailering, we bought an older Airstream a few years before
retirement and that contributed importantly to our learning curve.

Hope this is helpful to you. Good luck on your full-timing.
