Subject: [VAL] New Val list member, and new Airstreamer

Howdy folks.

Its recommended I take a moment to introduce myself instead of just fire
away. After all its good manners! Anyways, much of what Id ask related
to state condition and restoration/rehabilitation. All of which will make
more sense why Im asking if you know the project.

So here goes: My name is Marc Lizer. I live in the North Hollywood, CA. AKA
the East San Fernando Valley. I am the proud new owner of a 1957 Airstream
Overlander. (Pix to follow).

I am new to trailers and new to Airstreams. I had a unique opportunity. I
am doing a construction project, and need to have a jobsite trailer office.
Mostly its to keep a copy of the plans at the jobsite, and meet with subs
as needed. A fax, phone and a filling cabinet.

So I get to thinking: rental fee, for ugly brown box, and the duration
needed. Thats about$1500.00. I could buy something for that much! Either
fix it up and keep it, or sell it for purchase price. Heck, even if I sell
it for a loss, Im ahead!

I started looking for an Airstream and quickly found out I wouldnt be able
to go that route.

I settled on 1952 Happy Home Trailer, made by the Happy Home Trailer
Company in El Monte. I found it via Craigslist. Pretty decent shape in my
opinion, but it needed work. Had the original stove, fridge, heater and
toilet, and great wood paneling.

After rolling it to the jobsite my contractor sees it and tells me that he
known what I was planning, his buddy had some old trailer on a piece of
land he is going to be developing up in the Chatsworth hills, and to go get
a look at it and see Im interested.

Needless to say, after seeing it, I cant write him a check fast enough. I
want to firm up a price take it off his hands. I list the Happy Home on
ebay as I found it, with no improvements, starting bid at 1400.00, as I
figure Ill loose a hundred bucks difference between the Happy Home and
what I'm paying for the Airstream (yes that's right, $1500.00 for it!).

I sold the Happy Home via e-bay for 2150.00 (I really expected it to sell
for less, or even need to re-list it). The new owner is very happy with her
purchase. Shes looking forward to fixing it up.

Now to the Overlander. It had no title, and was last registered in 1960,
and has been on jacks since , sitting under an oak tree. It was
originally used as a construction trailer while a home was being built on
the adjoining parcel, and then used as an extra room.

<img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~quadrodiablo/57overlander1curbside.JPG>
<img
src=http://home.earthlink.net/~quadrodiablo/57overlander2streetside.JPG>

It is missing the stove, and fridge. As well as the benches and table in
the front area.
<img

.JPG>
<img
src=http://home.earthlink.net/~quadrodiablo/57overlander12interiorfore.JPG>

The floor has been recovered (plywood and vinyl tiles). The interior has
been painted 2 or three times. The toilet is replaced. It has no blackwater
system, and has new plastic plumbing for all the fixtures, leading out to
city service. It has no freshwater tank, as was run from city service. No
pump or battery for that matter.

All the 110 plugs and fixtures work. Cord is a 30 amp with a funky 3 prong
plug.

Overall not too much aluminum denting and damage. The notable one is this
<img
src=http://home.earthlink.net/~quadrodiablo/57overlander9treebranch.JPG>

It has a hydraulic brakes. I have now clue how this system works. But it
does seem to work.
<img
src=http://home.earthlink.net/~quadrodiablo/57overlander8hitchandbrakes.JPG>

Ask me any other questions that will better help in describing the features
and conditions.

Now to where Im at so far. Ive taken care of registration and title. I
got rid of the split rim wheels, and think I got a pretty good deal on
them, all 5 cost me just about half of the purchase price of the trailer.

I have a good 8 months to work on it.

Id love to hear some opinions on what approach some of the seasoned (and
not so seasoned) Airstreamers would approach the project.

But here's the first actual question. Did I peg the ID correctly? I used
one of the Airstream photo archive sites and compared.
It measures 23 feet of just body (no bumper). The tongue is 4 feet long.
Grand total is 27 1/2 feet (with bumper).

It has the Whale Tail rear with 2 bargman #6 (or 9, depending upon how you
look at it?) bezels, and a 13 segment front.
<img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~quadrodiablo/57overlander3front1.JPG>
<img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~quadrodiablo/57overlander4front2.JPG>
<img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~quadrodiablo/57overlander5whaletail.JPG>

It has rear bathroom. <img
src=http://home.earthlink.net/~quadrodiablo/57overlander13tub.JPG>
nd 2 twin beds.

It's serial number reads a 6733.
<img
src=http://home.earthlink.net/~quadrodiablo/57overlander6serial6733.JPG>
(I'll try and get a better pic of the serial number)

So is it another year or another model?

Second question: The interior has been re-painted. Last coat looks to be a
household latex. Underneath a house oil. And under that the Zolatone. I
want to do bare aluminum in the front and back segmented areas.

What's the best approach to removal? Heat? Chemical? The chem works fine on
the two top layers. but just pisses off the zolatone. What's the best agent
that works upon it?

Lastly, I would like to deal with the door handle. Someone did a repair. It
works. But there has got to be a better way! Is this the original style?
Any leads for a NOS on this part? How about a substitute?
<img
src=http://home.earthlink.net/~quadrodiablo/57overlander7doorhandle.JPG>

I really do appreciate the vast knowledge base that you all have, and I
hope one day to contribute in return.

You guys are great! Many good ideas on how to light up my flamingo family. The
Cheesy Lights set with the palm trees and flamingoes is the one I have already.
I can plug it in and clip the lights to the galley window and it looks very festive.
I think putting a string of white C hritmas lights inside of one of my other
flamingoes will work, a project for next spring. Merry Christmas, yall ! From
cold Colorado where the snow is deep enough for good skiing up on the mesas!

Marc,

The door handle looks quite close to original for a handyman's job. Most
likely you will not find a NOS replacement. I do not think that this style
door handle was used for long, My '60 originally had one that was different
from yours, that style was only used for a couple of years before it too was
abandoned. It was impossible to find. I ended up giving it away to someone
who had the same handle and could piece the two together to make one. I
ended up replacing mine with the mid 60's knob style handle that is still
currently available from Bargman. Unfortunately this required a patch in the
skin. I have been in this club for nearly 10 years and I have only seen 2
trailers with the '57 style door handle intact.

Did you use a Bargman L100 - I was thinking about replacing mine with the
L100 but the latch is much smaller than the original - so I would thinking
about using a standard household latch which is of similar size - has
anyone ever done this?

Scott,

Both my '57 Bubble and the '58 Wanderer have the "refrigerator" style
handles, both in fair to good shape. I had read a while back that there
was a gentleman having them made (investment cast IIRC) of stainless
steel, but his break even point was something on the order of $400 for
the handle and bezel. That would apparently imply that the internals
were all intact. I've since lost the address for the fellow...

Ken,

If memory serves, I tried to use a household unit in the door of my '62
Tradewind...the door was too thin. I ended up biting the bullet at an RV
place, but it wasn't all that bad. Around thirty buck I think. The
alternative, would have been to make an extra fat escutcheon on the inside to
make up the slack.

Hi Marc,
Welcome to vintage Airstreaming. We are an adventurous group to say the
least. Your door handle is being remanufactered by a guy in Texas. I've got
his contact info around here somewhere. When I find it, I'll post it to the
list. I know Ken in CO knows who it is too. Maybe he'll chime in as well.

A Joyous Holiday season to one and all.

Thanks for the info on the old handle.

It does work fine. Closes. Opens, and turns. So innards and catch are fine.

If I'm going to keep it as is, or just update the handle, I'll have a
locksmith make a key.

If replace the entire unit, then no need for that.

I still have time on that.

Oh yes. In my initial post I mentions I have 8 months to work on it.

I want to clarify what I meant.

Like I said I've got a construction project going on. the thing is I'm not
a contractor. In fact I'm a picture framer. But I do want to be on the
jobsite as much as possible to keep a handle on what's going on. Since I'm
going to be spending time there, I'd like to make it time well spent.

I can also use the some of the jobsite resources (like scaffolding, or
woodworking equipment)

This way when I do bring it home to roost it is at least further along in
restoration or re-habilitation. I by no means think I can be "done" in 8
months.

It's all a matter of degrees of don-ness.

For me: if it rolls, and keeps out water I'm 85% there. The rest is just
dressing.

For my wife, the dressing is 85% and in that case, I'm only 15% of the way
to a family trip in the beast.

Any takers for the Zolotone question? Jasco, Dads, 3M Safest stripper, and
Heat are what I've tried so far. They all work fine on the topcoats?

Also, did I actually get the year and model right? When I went to title it,
since it hadn't been registered in so long, it had, as the nice folks at
the DMV put it, "Fallen out of the system."

They really were not happy with the fact that it had just 4 numbers in the
Serial Number, since the space allocated for it had about 25 or 30 digits.
But they made their peace with that.

Thanks for all the answers.

I've got some polishing questions, but I think that those will be better
answered at the first WBCCI meetup, so I can get an idea of what grit to
start with, and if it needs compounding or not.

Thanks much,
Marc

Zolotone stripping is a pretty difficult project. I have
never heard of anyone doing it easily, as the stuff is
pretty indestructable. I'm not sure that the surface
underneath it has the thin skin of pure aluminum that will
shine up nicely either. I do adore the look of it tho,
especially on the ends of the old ones with the many seams
in a fan shape. I would suggest trying to remove the
Zolotone, if you must, in an area that is behind something,
so that if it does turn out to be way too hard if not
impossible, you don't have a big mess where it's visible.

I seem to recall that someone just replaced the aluminum
pieces rather than trying to strip it, don't remember....

Subject: [VAL] Which Olympic rivets?

    All,

I just got my vintage 12" X 20 1/2" Airstream access door in the mail
yesterday and am now preparing to install it in the curbside skin aft of the
wheel well.

Which of the many Olympic rivets shown at
http://www.rivetsplus.com/manufacture/gesipa/bulb_tite.asp do I need so
they'll match the ones already on my Caravel?

My best tape measured judgement is that the holes are 1/8" on the door
flange, yet I can see no diameter shown in the chart (measurement A) that
comes close. In addition, what type of head should I be using?

Are there shaver tools available to rent? At the prices I've seen being
asked for, I'd hate to have to buy one for the lousy 44 rivets I need to
install. Any and all help is welcome.

Here's wishing each and every one of you, your loved ones and friends a
Happy Holiday,

    All,

I also need to replace the missing weather seal material for the access
door I just bought. There's a 1/4 air gap between the inner and outer skin
edges that appears to be the place the seal goes.

Can anyone direct me to a source that has images of the seal and that
can supply me with the approximately 60" I'll need?

    Thanks again,

McMaster-Carr has a good collection of sealing material. www.mcmaster.com I sued
one of their D shaped cross section seal for my Carival door.

    Gerald,

Two things come to mind as a result of your kind reply.

    1. I should have checked the yellow bible first (I have an old one
Catalog #101 at 2784 pages)

    2. I should have guessed that if you replied, you'd just have sent me
there anyway. ; - )

All that said, I don't see an item there that would stay put in a 1/4"
slot.

Anyone else have suggestions? Might it be T-shaped with adhesive on the
underside of the T?

    Thank you my friend,

    Glyn

He (Brian Jenkins) is not making those door handles any more - bummer, because I

For those of you who love flamingos you might like to check these out. These
are flamingos are both ANIMATED and LIT. Their heads and wings move up and
down.
When I found these on sale, I bought the whole flock.

Now my husband says my flock is too big! Sooo... if you need to buy
yourself a late Christmas present, contact me at globetrotter64@xxxxxxxxxx.net.
They are new in the box.

Here is a picture of one.

Marc,
I am no expert, especially on 50's Airstreams, but based upon a review
of the photo's in the Vintage Airstream Club Photo Archives, I basically
agree with you. It is earler an early 1957 Overlander or a late 1956
Overlander, obviously from California, because of the Whale Tail. Per the
VAC site, 1957 S/N 6747 didn't have the slanted wheel wells, so yours
(6733) shouldn't have them. Interestingly, 6747 has the 7 panel end caps
front & rear, not the 13 front and 9 rear (whale tail), so yours might be
just before the change over. I know I have seem some whale tail '57's
(perhaps only other lengths?), so it appears this change was made during the
1957 model run for California. Also interesting is that none of the '57
Overlanders on the VAC site have the same windows as yours (nor do the
'56's), but there are a couple of '57 Flying Clouds (22') there that have
the whale tail and similar windows to yours. One is listed as having an
early '57 S/N (8111). Of course the '56 Flying Clouds on the VAC site also
have similar windows with the whale tail, so I'm afraid the best I can do is
Late '56 or Early '57.

But either way, it appears you got a real gem for a nice price. I really
like the 13 panel end cap look over the 7 panel look on a vintage trailer.

. . . Also, did I actually get the year and model right? When I went to
title it,
since it hadn't been registered in so long, it had, as the nice folks at
the DMV put it, "Fallen out of the system."

They really were not happy with the fact that it had just 4 numbers in the
Serial Number, since the space allocated for it had about 25 or 30 digits.
But they made their peace with that. . . .

Glyn,

On that page is a link to "More on shavable Bulb-tite". Click on it and
it takes you to a page with their recommendation for Airstream work, the
RV6607-5-5W. They list them at $22.60 per box of 100. You might also try
Blyler Rivet Supply at (800)325-3147.
