Hi Folks,

My name is Brad Jones and I live in Central Arkansas (about 30 minutes outside
of Little Rock) with my beautiful wife, Kelli. I don't own an Airstream but
I'm seriously thinking about getting a mid sixties model (under 20', maybe a
Caravel) to restore. I have always loved airstreams, like most everyone else,
and last Saturday I came across the TV show 'Hands On History' on the History
Channel where the host examines the construction of an Airstream. Watching the
show I thought, 'Hmmm....I wonder if many people restore older Airstreams and
what kind of resources are out there for that kind of project.' I went on-line
to check and here I am. I've been looking for a project and my wife and I have
talking about getting a R.V. or travel trailer. Right now I'm just learning,
so you wont hear from me much ( I suppose I will always be learning). When I
first started to consider this I was kind of hesitant; I know 1960's Mustangs
in and out, but Vintage Travel Trailers? But this
community is amazing. There is a wealth of experience out there.

I used high density 3.5" no formaldehyde fiberglass split in half but my
63 walls are not 2 inches only 1.5"
I believe owens corning makes a 2 inch high density fiberglass , it was
10 $ per 2x4 sheet , and only available in my area with a minimum order of
way too many boxes . Too much $ for me , so I went with the other .
Heres my hint - use spray adhesive ( like for headliners in cars ) too
hold it up if your doing under end caps .
I think the insulation was called series 701 - they have a website for
it . I have seen it used around concrete foundations with wire and stucco
over it . Maybe a local installer could help you .
The high density stuff I used worked fine if I was carefull splitting
it .

Ed,

Try looking for "water heater or furnace wrap" in the hardware stores. It's more
expensive than regular house wall insulation, but is 2" thick without paper or
plastic glued to either side. I used some to rebuild the insulation jacket
around my Airstream's water heater.

The following ADs for vintage Airstream trailers were in the Columbus Ohio
  Unit's September newsletter.

I am posting them because I thought the list's readers might be interested.
I have absolutely no connection with any of these, and receive no benefits
when/if they sell. Ads are quoted verbatim. Please do not contact me with
any questions, contact the person listed in the ad.

  AD #!1:
  "Vintage 1975 Airstream Trailer
Gene and Sharon Johnson purchased an 1987 Trailer in Florida last October.
They have all their necessities transferred into it and are now offering
their 1975 31' Trailer for sale. If you know anyone interested in a vintage
trailer have them call 614 889-0198 or e-mail slknep@xxxxxxxxxx.net They are also
offering for sale their 1996 Chevrolet Suburban, 454 Vortec engine. 132,000
  miles."

  AD #2:
  "1965 Vintage Trailer for Sale
This 24' twin axle trailer comes with its original manual and lots of
possibilities. If you know anyone looking for a vintage trailer call Kenny
Hunter at 614 274-7475. Priced to sell at $3,500.00. Kenny says you need to
see this trailer in order to appreciate it's possibilities. He does say
that it will need a new set of tires and it should be ready to go. (Don't
tell Kenny but that might be a clue to dicker on the price a bit!)"
(There was a very small B&W photo of the trailer printed with this AD. The
little bit you can see looks OK...)
  Enjoy!

  Dave

I used to buy 1" high density fiberglass from J. C. Whitney, originally
intended for under hood car insulation. I used it for lining speaker
cabinets where I needed sound dampening. Two layers of it would fit in
2" nicely.

Probably unfaced but cut rate (e.g. cheap off brand) 3.5" insulation
compressed to 2" would begin to perform as advertised. The real
insulator in foam and fiberglass is air, not the plastic or the glass.
What the plastic and the glass does is slow air circulation. So scrawny
3.5" insulation compressed to 2" will not perform as well as great 2"
insulation but better than no insulation, far better than no insulation.

The spray adhesive should be good for holding the insulation in position
all over the interior. ceilings, end caps and side walls. The last thing
it needs is to slid down the wall cavity from the vibration of road
travel. Stick it up and it can't.
